Default Just bought a 96 Disco (brakes, rotors)

Hey guys,

I just recently bought a 96 Disco having been won over from the Jeep family, and I could really use some help that would save me some money. The Discovery really needs new brake pads and rotors; I called the Land Rover dealership today and they said just for the front would be $700 dollars, I took it to my mechanic and he said he didn't even want to attempt it. Is it really that complicated of a fix, and if not could someone please help instruct me on how to do this myself or point me to a website that will explain how to do this.

Thanks

Mike in S.C.

Wow!!
As you have found the dealer is a huge rip off.
www.atlanticbritish.com has everything you could ever want for your truck.
If you dont want to do the work or cant then just take it to a brake shop.
It is really easy.
Have your wheel bearings repacked with fresh grease while they have the rotors off.
Your mechanic is scared because it is a Land Rover, doing brakes on your truck is not different than any other car.

And do a search for the "RAVE" manual, it is the same repair manual that the dealer uses and it is a free download.
Alot of guys have a link in their signature here on the forum.

download is in my sig.

Brakes are not hard, just a little time consuming. read through the manual and see what you think. As Spike said, roverparts.com has really good brake kits.

I have a 96 disco and it takes around 10 min per wheel to change the brake pads. all you have to do is remove the to cotter pins, remove the pin holding the pads, compress pistons put in new pads install retainer pins, cotter pins then you are done. Also you will need to bleed the brakes. start with right rear, left rear, right front, left front. always farthest from master cylinder

He needs new rotors too, and that takes more than 10 min.
You can get rotors and pads at NAPA and O'Reilly. I'm running Wagner from O'Reilly on my Disco at the moment.
You will need new hub seals and if you off-road you want to use RTC3511, only available from a rover parts house.

It's not a hard job at all, very simple and straight forward.

If I can find them I have photos of all the steps for a complete brake system overhaul, from MC to hubs.

Tom-if you can find those pics that would be awesome, then we can add them to the "tech section" that we are working on.

Default update

Just finished the rotors and brakes on my 96 disco and while it wasnt easy, it wasnt that hard either. First repair job I've ever done myself. I'm running 148,000 miles on my disco, what are some of the things I need to have checked out as far as the engine goes?

Just change ALL of the fluids, belts and hoses, thermostat and filters.
Just like any other car.
