Just took ownership of my 2001 Discovery 2. I got "hot" on the way home from Atlanta. Replaced the fan clutch that was not acting properly. Flushed the coolant system.....and voila.....aluminum particles(or silver or whatever). Barrs if I've ever seen it. Called the previous owner and he says the heater core was leaking(o rings based on the description) so he added it. I'm a carpenter, so I know what I know and I know what I don't know and I don't know about internal combustion cooling systems and what have you. Fortunately, I know a great mechanic who does. I'm sending it Poston Motors in Cumming GA. I've used them for a while on my Xterra and my 4Runner. They're not the cheapest, but they're honest and they really diagnose things the proper way. Leak down test etc. Hope to have it back soon without a second mortgage!!!LOL. I'll still go to bat for the Rovers anyday. There's nothing like driving down service roads with a kayak on top and feeling better than riding down the pothole-ridden road of upstate NY! And I've never been stuck in a Rover...ever. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough.

 

When you get it back look at the Ultra Gauge, it can show those temps rising before the gauge starts to move. UltraGauge Automotive Information Center and OBDII Scan Tool - and it is a code scanner and re-setter, plus you can program alarm point for temp, etc.

 

2nd the notion for another warning method... By the time the dash gauge tells you anything it may be way too late.

To save you many headaches down the road, look over the high-miler service recommendations posted in stickies. You may also want to consider a lower temp, soft spring thermostat.

If it makes you feel any better most of the frequent posters I've seen here have dealt with or are dealing with cooling issues in one form or another.

 

3X Ultra gauge! Its awesome. Look at the high mileage service too. Look at the front drive shaft. Does it have 3 grease inserts or just 1? If only1 then thats a disaster waiting to happen. It fails and smacks the exhaust, transmission, and oil pan. Destroying all. Then my friend you have a truck that is only good for parts and the main parts are already gone....

 

Barr's leaks will not hurt your land rover discovery.
I run it in our Discovery I.

However, using Barr's to cover up a flaw when selling a Discovery is dishonest. The flaw should have been disclosed.

Our Discovery I used to leak antifreeze into the cylinders which burned out the CATS - twice.

I replaced the head gaskets.

I still put in the Barr's leaks. As I figure - if the new head gaskets start to fail - the Barr's may help a bit.

Depends on the nature of the leak.

Yeah, thanks for the heads up. My mechanic recommended the Ultra Gauge too. He's also checking out the other notorious issues. Should be right as rain when I get it back.
