I used and loved K&N in my '96 LT4 Trans Am ram air... they had touchy MAF's too, but the filters where so cheap I'd just buy a new one... I don't care if its reusuable, I ain't washin it and putting oil back on it, I'll leave that to the automated machines on the assembly line that don't drink heavily while working on cars lol. I couldn't really tell the difference seat of pants, perhaps a slightly improved throttle response, but in that world every other post in the forums is a side by side dyno run test of some new combo of aftermarket crap. K&N usually saw a 1-2hp increase over average, maybe 2-4 peak, and nill on torque numbers really... but thats with a 5.7L motor designed to run flat on an open paved road... you couldn't move in .5" of snow reliably, let alone sand or ruts over 2" being that that was the ground clearance anyway haha. Most people also had heads, cam, injector work, longtube matched headers, and twin 58mm throttlebodies, they could suck enough air OUT of a diso 4.0 to stall it and run it backwards. And whats 2-3 horsies when your putting down 500+ with a +/-5% depending on humidity, engine temps and the direction of the wind lol

With these trucks I'd be far more concerned with getting cleaner air, even at a drop in "performance flow" numbers. I keep my disco under 2k rpm 95% of the time, I peak at 3k merging onto highways, thats about it lol. Grab a good snorkle, kit, seal up the box good, keep tight fitting around the airbox/filter seals, make sure your throttlebody is clean as a whistle, and change your O2's when they get old, best way to maintain power and "economy" haha. These where built like WW2 Tiger tanks. Overweight, underpowered... it's hard to do either in a disco well! But thats also why, when they WORK, that they are damn near unstoppable!

And, once in awhile flow it when going out onto the highway so you can blow out some of the built up crap from the engine. 5200 RPM's and a up shift have never hurt a Disco yet.

I know, the product has been tried and tested by many on these discovery's and over and over they have caused failed parts. Other vehicles they never cause a problem but the maf on a disco is so sensitive it does not take much to make it malfunction . So that's the reason the warning is there, if someone wants to try it and K&N is willing to stand behind there product and replace your maf shortly after you put on the K&N then see if you can get it in writing. I don't think that will happen or work out for you.

I've used K&N filters in 3 different vehicles back in the 80 & 90's and couldn't tell any difference in any of them. I considered it a learning experience. Now I just use paper filters and change them out when they look dirty. Way easier and if you get them from Amazon, you can find some really good filters (Mann) on the cheap.

If looking for a bolt on performance upgrade that goes under the hood in the air flow stream there's always Eaton...

Don't have a Land Rover (yet) but I've run K&N's in the Jags pretty much since I've had them. For me, it is not a performance incentive, rather economic. I keep cars til they become obvious charitable gifts. So the ~$40 Re-usable K&N + ($Unknown) bottle of oil (it goes a long way if applied properly- thus unremembered cost is a significant cost-avoidance over $8-$12 paper elements. I actually prefer the AFE Pro-Dry S I'm running in the trucks due to the lack of necessity and cost of messing with the oil - but not available for my Jags at the time.

Only one I've noticed a perceptible performance improvement in was the Exc and it was a cold-air-intake, more than just an element swap.

I like reusable filters, but probably wouldn't mess with them if I swapped cars every 2 - 3 years.

Your post led me to an hour of research this morning.

You can get an M90 from a pontiac or thunderbird for less than $200. Probably less than $100 at a u-pull yard.

tempting
