Default K&N filter on disco 2

I've been debating over getting a K&N filter for my disco but i hear that the bosch maf's are very sensitive and go out. Is anyone on here using them and are they any good on a disco 2.

Too much controversy using one on the Disco. Not worth it in my opinion. Some people say they are more efficient and increase hp and mpg. Others say that they let too many fine particles in or that since they allow more volume of air per time in, more dirt is able to get in per time. I have had one on my Jeep for a long time. I can't tell if it's agood or bad thing. I forgot long ago if I got better mileage with it. Cost wise there may not be a big difference, they last forever, but are pretty expensive and the cleaner is not all that cheap either. However, if something happens to the filter, K&N is very good about replacing it (1,000,000 mile warranty... how clever ). It is hard to believe that they can be as efficient as they claim without allowing larger dirt particles in.

I've had one in my 99 Disco for about three years. I haven't had any problems but also haven't noticed any benefits other than not having to clean it for 50,000 miles (so they say). Put one in my Porsche 996 about the same time and fouled the MAF sensor.........cost me $250 to replace the MAF sensor and another $35 for a Porsche air filter. Apparently the oil in the filter fouls the MAFS. I wouldn't buy another K&N filter.........ever!

Maybe the problem isthat people over-oil the filters, the filter media can't absorb it all and the excess oil can get sucked into the intake. Check out the K&N website. They have a page dedicated to the MAF problem (I haven't read it, but I'm curious)

I had bought one for my Montero years ago and it cost me $75. Then when it came time to clean it it was $35 for the cleaning kit. I bought a brand new Bosch filter from AutoZone for $15.
I gained an average of 1 MPG. For the money I would not buy one. To much hassle and WAY to costly. $15 every 20k or so is cheaper in the long run.

K&N air filters are ok on D1's, their MAF can handle to oil/dirt contamination, but a D2 with the Bosch MAF can't.
Doesn't matter if they work well on other vehicles, with the Bosch you will just have to keep buying new MAF's, for what, a 1/4 MPG increase in fuel economy, cause that is all you get out of them.
If you are going to be off alot, carry a paper filter with you cause the K&N will plug up so bad that you will drop many MPG on your drive home.
This is not to say I don't like K&N, they make one of the better oil filters for our trucks, K&N 3001.

Mike,

Do you have a recommended general filter (non off road)?

I just took my K & N off. After 84K miles never had a problem with the MAF. 2 months after getting the filter, my MAF died. Couldn't be over-oiling since I never oiled it. Replaced the filter and MAF ($130) and now am good to go.

Used K&N for sale....cheap!!
