I posted this in the DATW thread, but it seems just as relevant here:

We run a K&N in our personal D1 Disco (150k+ and still running strong) and we have never had to replace a MAF. Neither did the DATW Discos (D2) as far as I know. K&N produced some informational videos specifically around the MAF myth:

Totally different MAF's. The D1 can handle it just fine, but the Bosch is too sensitive.

Use your own judgement, but people have had MAF's die after putting one on. I wouldn't, if it was me. You wil actually get better fuel mileage with a paper filter. You are increaing your HP, but at the cost of your mileage with the K&N.. If it lets more air through, I would think more dirt would get through as well...
