Default K&N Oil Filter - Leaking? Help?

I drive a 2001 Disco 2 SD. I've changed the oil on it numerous times, this time after reading some reviews I decided to go the 15/40 route w/ the K&N oil filter. So, I get everything tightened up and start to pull it out of the shop and almost immediately the oil light comes on. I shut it off and notice that almost all of the oil has come out of the filter location. I was using the HP2004 and decided to do it over again and use the 3001 (which should be the same size, just longer). So I fit the new filter, doesn't seem like it's sealing tight, put in around 2 more qts and again, just drips out. I had a couple of STP S16's laying around so put one on and it was fine, no drips or leaks even after starting. Where am I going wrong? Any help would be appreciated - going on 148k miles and want as much flow as possible.

Doesn't sound like the filters were all the way tight? Or cross threaded maybe? If the filter is not tight its going to leak.

The 3001 is the correct oil filter. Pull the filter off and see if you left the o-ring seal from the last oil filter up in the oil filter housing.
Also check and make sure the boltes that hold the oil filter housing are tight.

That's what I was thinking. I'm just not sure why I had that issue w/ 2 of them and the STP just went right on. Both the K&N were about a 1/2" away from being flush and I made sure no gaskets were left. I hand tightened, used the 1" wrench to tighten & it seemed like it just kept spinning but not getting any closer. I'll try another this weekend - can't stand the STP. Disco Mike - the 2004 and 3001 should be the same filter w/ the 3001 being longer, correct? Thanks for all the help!

Hey Logan, here is a link to the k&n oil filter if this is what you were using there is no reason it should not work. Did you return the one you tried?

Also the mobile 1-301 is the same filter just $2 cheaper jyst so you know and remember that with this filter you will be using about 1qt more oil that with the smaller filter.

I tried to return them both but they wouldn't accept them since I had prefilled them w/ oil prior to install. I'm hoping the next one will work! I'll try the Mobile as well - nothing wrong w/ spare parts. Honestly, I was hoping someone else had this problem - now I feel like the guy who can't change his own oil

Lol I'm sure your capable of that. The threads were not damaged? If its a defective product they should return it regardless. Seems as something had to be messed up in the threads.

Threads in the filter? No - on either one - it did feel stripped because when it would get close to the housing (1/2") it would just spin freely. I thought they would return it too. I guess you have to decide it's broken before you put it on - better work on my psychic abilities.

I have used the 3001 and the 301 from Mobil 1, both made in the same factory, for an easy 10 years and never had a mis-fit or leak. You need to look closer.
