Default Kayak on roof with stock cargo bars?

I'd like to buy a kayak this summer, and the model I'm looking at is 14.5' long, and about 60lbs I believe. I don't have my truck handy at the momment to do measurements, figured I'd ask here in the meantime.

Would this fit up on my '00 Disco's roof without much overhang to the front using the stock roof rack bar things? I'd place a rubber or cloth cover under it obviously so it didn't scratch the sunroof or paint, and I have plenty of tie downs and racheting cargo straps that are rated FAR above that weight haha.

I figure lay it upside down, 2 main straps, one front, one rear across sideways between the two cargo bars, then one from the bars around the back point of the kayak, then from the back to the front point of the kayak to keep it from lurching forward and back during acel/braking? maybe another one connecting it to the rear ladder, or maybe a tie to the front brush bar?

Any other general tips, maybe someone could recommend a dedicated kayak mount for use down the future when I can afford one?

I carried mine on my D1's factory bars for a while, until I got an SD rack. It worked ok, but I always also attached it to the side rails because of the way the cross bars attach with the little pins.

Too bad you don't live closer, I have a Liquid Logic Tryon I'm looking to sell or trade.

You will be fine, but even adding Yakima cross bars would be better, you dont need the Yak Rack kayak carry thingy, just the cross bars.

I added a baja rack and my kayaks fit perfect.

I have thule cross bars with thule kayak cradle attached to the factory rails. This allows me to fit a 2 person kayak on the cross bars with my 1 person kayak in the cradle. I can put up the 1 person kayak by myself in the cradle.
