Kayaks on safari rack?
Hi all!
Looking at roof rack options for my “new” 2002 Disco.
I’m a bit torn as I love the look of safari racks, but doubt I will need to carry much gear on top. More likely will carry kayaks and surfboards.
Do kayaks and other long items mount well to safari racks? Or should I just save a bunch of money and get some cross bars?
Thanks!

Crossbars are easy to install and remove. Those racks are heavy and you have to keep them on. Someone opened a thread on the topic just a few days ago.

Although I have not tried to mount kayaks on my safari rack, I am sure a standard set of kayak brackets would mount no problem. What is surpising is how much more top heavy a safari rack truck is and how much wind noise there is even unloaded.
If you are just going Kayaks I would go cross bars, maybe look at teh factory roof rail extension

Yeah, those were Craigslist kicker special J hooks too. The hardware was crap so I got some bolts and stuff at the local hardware store. The j hooks will rotate about but I wrapped the bars with silicone tape. A nice set of kayak j hooks would be perfect. Those are monster kayaks and Pedal drive ones. After that I realize investing in some smaller low end kayaks would be the easiest to transport. Also if you don’t have a rear step or hitch step it’s going to be challenging to get bigger kayaks up there.
