Key question
The ignition cylinder/ tumbler has just failed on my D2 - spins 360
I found an OEM cylinder with mating blade precut- was directly from rover ordered for an 03. The guy junked the truck abs never opened the package. Original bar codes included.
can I use this in my 04? And if the new ignition has key cut - can I stick the blade in my fob & good to go? Or does the truck still need to be programmed to match recognize anything new?

Yes, you can use the replacement cylinder and "blade" in your '04.
But the other question isn't clear. What kind of "blade" is precut for the replacement cylinder? I inferred that it's a blade from a keyless entry remote. If that's correct then yes, you can simply stick it into your existing fob and you'll be good to go. No programming required.
If I were you I'd keep a separate key for the door, just in case you ever need to get into the truck and the battery is dead. You can also update the wafers in the door lock to match the new ignition key.

How would I go about updating the door lock to match the new key? Very interested in knowing more about that!
your right, It appears as tho the “blade” is manufactured by rover to fit the key fob & is included in the packaging with the cylinder.
Im going to go for it and report back.
Believe it or not I couldn’t get a straight answer from dealership AND a pretty renown Land Rover restoration company local lead me to believe he would have to erase the key data via original programming equipment & said sometimes the ECU would erase and not re-write, as the programming is getting old..
They all suggested getting the aftermarket fix from Atlantic British.
I think these guys guys aren't understanding the scenario and are assuming you're changing more than just the blade. Or they don't want to commit to an answer because they don't want to be held accountable (typical of dealer idiots...). The ONLY thing that could be an issue would be IF the ignition cylinder had some kind of chip that talked to the computer but that would be a bit unprecedented. Our fobs talk to the computers, not the ignition cylinder. I think GM may have had something funky like that years ago but I'm nearly certain that none of that's in play here. I'd bet my lunch money our cylinders are mechanical only, and you'll be fine. Changing the blade and the ignition should be 100% benign.
Regarding the door lock, if you search cylinder and wafer on this site you'll see what's entailed in "rekey-ing" a lock cylinder to a different key. I've even posted a bit about it as I've done it to plenty of cars. Doing a door lock it doesn't look that bad in these Rovers but he disassembly is tricky. Luckily there are good pics here from someome how took one apart. For an ignition it's a considerable challenge.

That "someome" may be me (link below). The link takes you to post #13 in the thread. You can scroll to the top of the thread for context if you like.

Now that the original poster's received guidance from our wealth of worthy contributors...my question is...how much do internet picture weigh?
If they are hefty...mln01...do you mind if l steal a set...or two...or three?
