Default Keys & Transponders

Does an 03 Discovery S has a transponder? I have 1 remote key and I need a spare just in case.

No transponder. You can use a plain metal key from the hardware store.

Thanks. I didn't think it had a engine immobilizer?

No transponders in d1 or d2 from 1994-2004.

The immobilizer uses the door locks or the remote, not a chip in the key.

I don't know what a "transponder" is, but I do know that at least the 2003 and 2004 DO have a chip in the key fob, for remote activation of the door locking system. I did a lot of investigation, and talking to the the LR dealer, to learn that, if one wants to get a new replacement key fob (or second fob key set) one must buy a NEW key fob, WITH ITS ATTACHED BAR CODE, TO ENABLE THE LR dealer to be able to program that new key fob for your particular Rover--they told me they will not program used key fobs for your vehicle. The new firmware version, version 6, on the Hawkeye diagnostic scanner, and some similar diagnostic scanners, will program USED key fobs (ones originally used on other vehicles other than yours), so any used key fob bought off ebay, etc. will work with your vehicle after programming with Hawkeye or similar scanner (previously, this wasn't the case; used fobs could not be programmed). You can, of course, get a simple metal key; not fob (electronic), that will work mechanically as well, the same as the original metal non electronic key. Fact is, that at least for the 2003/2004, as part of the electronic key fob locking system, they do have what is called "superlocking," as well as normal locking, whereby, in "superlocking" mode, the doors cannot be opened from inside or outside; should someone break a window, or otherwise enter vehicle; the alarm goes off, of course, but also the engine is immobilized; cannot be started--that is how my 2004 works; is described in manual.

OK. So if I bought a regular, non remote key. By unlocking the doors manual in the key hole. Will that disabled the alarm and allow me to start the disco with no problems?

Yes, it will disable alarm, when turned to open locks; will enable alarms, when turned to lock doors. Also, manual key will enable "superlocking" system. Naturally, it will start disco, same as any key, remote or manual.
At least it does on my 2004, as I often use my manual key only.

On my Hawkeye, version 5, I repeatedly tried to program used keys; it wouldn't allow it; that is exactly why I contacted Bearmach, makers of the Hawkeye, asking them to include programming on next update, for used keys.. They said they would, and they did, on version 6, which, I think, just came out last month.

There is a post on this forum with a form that will create the bar codes you need for hawkeye 4 and 5. I got my codes from a land rover tech.

It's good news that they added the feature in 6 to make it easier.
