Knock while in Park
I have a 2000 Discovery II with 210K miles on it. It has recently developed a knock/rattle sound that is only present when the truck is in Park. Once it is shifted into gear, and the entire time it is being driven, the noise is gone. Once back in Park, it starts up again.
My instinct is telling me something driveshaft related, and with the mileage I have on it, and assuming I have the orig driveshafts on it I am planning on replacing at least the front driveshaft with a serviceable one before I run into U-joint issues.
I've gained a LOT from this forum. Does anyone have thoughts on the noise and its relation to being in Park? If it were a cam or lifter issue I would hear it even when driving I assume?

you probably need to do your drive shafts, but that is not your problem the drive shaft does not spin in park. Have you check to see if the exhaust is hitting anywhere and does it do it in neutral?
Perplexing. I went out and started it to check if the noise was present when in neutral, and it isn't making the noise. I will get her up on ramps and get a better look at the exhaust later today.
Thanks for your input.

First, yes rebuild or replace the front drive shaft if it hasn't been done, how often do you lube the u_joints?Now for what it is worth, the shaft can not cause the tranny to make a knocking sound while sitting in park, unless it is only one know and then it could be u-joints. when was the last time you serviced the tranny, t/case and diffs?

They do exist.
