I was born in texas and when I was about 2 years old we moved to Tampa Florida. 21 years later I moved to the USVI (St. Croix). I have been here since April 2008 but will be moving back when a job presents itself. This island is 7 miles by 21 miles...one napa, 2 k-marts never stocked, everything is expensive and off roading is limited to the island.

I bought my rover on ebay =) from Florida, flew up and did the test drive and inspection and had the option of terminating the sale. A week later I shipped her down. I am the 3rd or 4th owner and have all dealer service records up to the 45k mile service and I bought it with 56k miles.

Then i learned about this forum and cringed when I realized my 03 was an 03 and lacked CDL... hence my write-up on installing the most important mod for the 03 Disco... and the oil pressure gauge.

(Sorry I got carried away answering your main question)

PS If I was in the British Virgin Islands.. i would be driving a TD5 Disco Or Defender and rubbing it in all of your faces like Urban Panzer does to us from across the pond.

hahah what was my main question.. if it was a BVI you would have a TDI... thats awesome. And there is no immigration problem because it is a USVI? you can just come and go as you please? it was easy to import your truck from florida as far as regulations go? I would love to move there. not sure what the hell i would do for work though. haha..

Yeah traveling from the mainland to puerto rico and the USVI you only need your U.S. drivers license, no passport required.

and as far as shipping in a vehicle from the mainland, it is easy since it is already in the US. However you have to pay the following:

Road tax: $0.16 per pound if it not made in the U.S. or $.8 if it is made in the US. So even foreign brand cars made in the US can pay $.8 instead of $.16

Personal Use tax: 4% of the KBB value of the car. or sale price, which ever is higher.

Customs: 3.5% of the KBB value of the car. or sale price, which ever is higher.

Inspection at the DMV is $10

Registration and Plates was about $90 for the rover.

All together I paid $1,349 to bring it in and about $1000 to ship it.

If you plan on buying a car to ship to the USVI, you don't pay the sales tax, since you pay the taxes mentioned once you get it here.

If I could afford any year Defender, I could bring one in. But It could never ship it to the mainland until it was 20 years old (i think)

premium gas is $2.59 for 91 octane right now with no additives...I get about 11.5mpg to 12 mpg on my normal commutes due to the hills. not only can you not go very far, you cant go very fast! so if you have driveline vibrations at 55 mph+, you WONT down here....lol.

here is some off roading you could expect.

Is it obvious to assume the St. Croix fishing rod company started there?
