Default Landrover discovery 2 Td5 2002 noise from gearbox

Hi I have a discovery 02 Td5,there is 136,000 miles. On Saturday last, while 2 miles from home,a noise came from the gearbox, cracking noise,I noticed a loss of power from the engine as if the drive had come undone.on idle there is a whining noise. The gear shift has got tighter and there is a loud noise on forward and reverse movement.when the clutch is pressed to the floor, the noise stops.I was wondering would it be the clutch, bearings or the gearbox.About 6-7 weeks ago there was a banging noise coming from the gearbox,I brought it to the local garage and the noise stopped and he topped up the gearbox, wasnt low,it ran fine till sat.I was wondering has anyone experienced the same .thank you.

Have you looked under the truck?
Is the front prop shaft still connected to the transfer case?
It is common for it to break.
Otherwise it could be the throwout bearing, clutch plate, clutch, slave cylinder...almost anything.

Download the factory shop manual, called the RAVE, and see for yourself what the dealership would have to do while performing this task. Then you can compare to your skills, available tools, space, thickness of wallet, thirsty friends that might help, etc.

No, he's in the right one, the rest of the world calls any 4x4 SUV a jeep, notice he did not capitalize the "J", thus he's not talking about the brand "Jeep" but using the general term for a 4x4 family hauler, jeep.
Same as us calling a "pick up" a "pick up" no matter what brand you are talking about, Ford, Chevy, Dodge...they are all pick up trucks.

Hi Savannagh and to all who took the time to reply much appreciated,I am from Ireland and we normally call all 4x4," jeeps", even though we have Jeeps as a brand in Ireland, sorry about all that.I wont go into some of the other words we use over here that could cause offence.I havent yet done anything,I have been reading up on the manual and my brother is to help me out when he gets time as he has a garage and a pit,but very busy with work-family.I will keep ye posted as to what happens. Thanks again to you all.
