Well, I was getting ready to buy a 2004 Disco SE7. Called up a LR dealership that had done its servicings, and they told me that it was previously leaking around the head gaskets. How much are we looking at to replace/fix this or should I move on & look for another Disco? The parts might not be too high, but how many labor hours do you guys think this would take? (estimate)


Oh, and it's $11,200. It looks VERY clean and sounds very well. Everything works & has 80k miles on it. Sound like a fair price?

 

If the engine has not been over heated and the heads not damaged, $1700 plus, for a SAI engine a couple hundred more.
if the dealer were to do it $2500 plus.

 

Ok. Well I know a local place (Bear Valley Land Rover in Atlanta) and from what I've heard, they do good. Their flat rate is $89.95 an hour which I'm sure beats LR dealers. So knowing this info, the seller should come down another grand correct?

 

With good head gaskets that truck should sell for under $10k, with bad head gaskets you should not pay any more than $7000.
Either they fix it, lower the price to $7k or you walk.

 

OK I just KKB.com'd the truck, retail (at a car dealer)is $11,500, and that is excellant condition, meaning nothing wrong, private party in good comdition (no major defects) is $8500, trade in value is (no major defects)$6500.
Now, needing $2500 worth of repairs BEFORE you can drive it...
Take it to dealer and have them give it the once over, take that esitmate for the needed repairs and use that AND the print outs of the trucks value and use that to negotiate your price.

Use all three sites and take a average, then deduct the repairs from that.
So settle on a purchase price and then deduct for the needed repairs, and get the highest repair esitmate that you can, which will be the dealer, and then take it where ever you want to get it fixed and pocket the differance.

 

Well we got in touch w/ Hennessy today & they sent us all of their records. It's been serviced regularly. It's last service was mid December of '08. Northpoint told them it would cost $3-4k to replace head gaskets. So I fill pretty sure this is the reason for selling. So yeah, I fill pretty sure now knowing this info, the seller should knock off at least $2k. If not, then I guess this LR is a no go.
