Default Leaking oil pan mystery -- too much crankcase pressure?

I am continuing to struggle with a leak on my son's D2.

Three weeks ago I replaced the sump gasket: the mating surface was dry on three sides and the gasket was firml;y attached with hylomar, but on the back surface -- at the corners and across the 5th crank bearing cap, it was soaked with oil. The bottom seam between the sump and the tranny bell housing was wet with oil as well and the brace and transmission bottom rearward of that seam was coated in oil.

The flywheel and as much of the rear wall of the engine and along the crux seams as I could check with a finger wrapped in a paper towel was still clean and dry -- so right now I don't think it is a rear main seal or cru/cap issue.

Son drove it 3,000 miles in a week -- to Colorado and back -- and had to put 4 quarts in it over the trip.

Replaced the gasket again this weekend: it showed the same leak pattern as the first replacement.

This time I abandoned the hylomar and used RTV Black Ultra instead, and liberally where it appears to have been leaking. Followed directions -- applied to both sides of gasket, hand-tightened to "squeeze" the RTV, waited an hour, then torqued to specs (18ft-lbs) -- and waited another 8 hours for curing before filling it. After a 10 mile test drive, all seemed dry.

He drove it back to college, and am still wating on whether there was any consumption, but in the meantime was wondering whether I might have a crankcase pressure issue and the pattern of where I am seeing leaking is just where the pressure finds a way out (path of least resistance).

When we rebuilt the engine, we cleaned the rocker covers by filling them with solvent, and the solvent flowed right thru the separators (these act like PCV valves, right?). No codes, so I am assuming that the PCVs/separators are working correctly.

Any thoughts?

BTW, I am guessing that when properly filled, the non-circulating, standing level of oil the oil is ABOVE the sump-engine mating surface as the sump itself by appearances only holds 4ish quarts. Am I right, and that when standing, the sump seal is "underwater" so to speak?
