Default Leaking steering fluid! Have i over tightened?

Hello all, First post here on the fourms. I had adjusted the steering box on my 03 disco yesterday per the rave manual. After driving around for an hour or so i parked it in my garage only to find a massive puddle of steering fluid leaking out. Upon inspection i found it leaking out of the lock nut on top of the steering box. Could it be a seal or possible over/under tightening of the box? It seems to only leak when running. Any answer would be very appreciated.

Sure wish someone would chime in and answer this. I'm having the exact same issue with mine, and it would be nice to get a part number for the correct seal rather than spend a ton of money on a new box...

On my landcruiser, this is a common issue after adjusting the box, but a $2 seal from the dealership fixes it right up.

Hmmmm, so the seal is made into the locknut it appears. Thanks for the info.

I may be able to pull the locknut off and match something up, or worst case, RTV the heck out of it. LOL

Easy fix.

When the landrover is cold in the morning - remove the nut.

Clean the whole area including the screw shaft the nut goes onto.

Get Permatex aviation gasket.
Put that on the nut threads and on the area the nut seats into on the pump.

Put Permatex aviation gasket on the treads of the screw too.
and some on the base where it contacts.

Put the nut back on and adjust the lash as per Rave.

Let sit for a time.
Done.

also check you did not bust off the bleed screw near the nut.

Thanks! I'm going to give this a shot today and see how it goes. Best case, it fixes the leak. Worst case, I still end up buying that steering box anyway.

Gave the area a good cleaning with some brake cleaner, and after starting it up, this is what I found:

The leak is definitely coming from the adjuster nut/screw. No telling how long it's been leaking. I just bought the disco 2 weeks ago.

Pulled the nut off to see if there was any sort of seal, and it sure doesn't look like it. Looks like a regular nut to me...

Also don't see any sign of a seal on the box side either.

So, I used some Ultra Black (made for oily applications) and packed it in and around the area. I put it back together once, and after looking at it, it just didn't look like I had used enough to completely seal it up. So I pulled the nut back off and added more. I may have went overboard (probably), but I plan to let the truck sit until it cures.

I'll update after the silicone cures and I drive it around.
