Default leaking power steering fluid

Ive just got a 96 Discovery about a week ago. I has been leaking fluid for a while (lots of crap gunked up underneath), but the levels have been ok. Today i noticed it was leaking alot more and i havent even ran it. It usually just leaks while running and a bit after i shut it off. It doesnt appear to be coming from any hoses. I dont know much about cars but as far as i can trace the leak, it looks like its coming from the mechanical part that is connected to the 2 rods that go to either wheel. But cant tell for sure. Any ideas or comments?

I will be the first to say...
This is totally normal. It is not leaking. This is Land Rover's way
of keeping your fluids flushed. When it stops leaking then you are
in trouble. Otherwise just keep topping it up! cheerio!

Your steering box is leaking, he was joking, they are not supposed to leak, but if you have been around Rovers long enough you know that they leak to mark their territory.
Because you have a DI it takes Dexron III for the power steering fluid NOT regular power steering fluid like American cars.
Go and buy a quart of Dexron III with stop leak, check the fluid level every couple of days and add the ATF with stop leak.
If the leak does not stop after you have added half the bottle or so then you need a new steering box.
I would recommend buying a used one as they are very pricey new.

Make sure that you do not run the system dry as you will then be buying a power steering pump as well as a steering box.

atxrover - welcome to the site and to LRs. You'll quickly learn that you will find the answer you need here but we like to joke around and have a good time also.

Land Rovers are known for leaking, or marking their territory as some like to say, but the power steering leaking is not normal. The only leak that I would consider normal and not worry about is oil from the valve covers. The valve cover bolts work loose and allow oil to leak out. Any other leaks need to be tracked down and repaired.

As Spike said, add a quart of ATF with stop leak. Make sure you don't overfill your power steering reservoir. Give the stop leak some time to work and if you still have problems or it gets worse then it's time to replace your power steering box.

Sorry, that was LR humor at your expense.

My 95 leaks from (deep breath) radiator, both atf lines
both p.s. lines, 1 coolant hose, both valve covers,
1 head. So I use humor to cope with the enormous
amount of work ahead of me.

i just fixed my power steering fluid leak on my 99 d1. i had already changed out my power steering box. didn't fix it. it was hard to see because fluid was everywhere. mine ended up being the high pressure hose. this only costs about 45 bucks new and you can probably do it yourself. try this. i had someone start the truck, and sit in the drivers seat and turn the wheel back and forth. i could literally see the fluid spraying out of the hose. so it ended up being an easy and cheap fix. hopefully yours will too. you might want to clean up around the area before you look so you can see the fluid leaking better.

Non related issues.
Power steering leak is your first concern.
