Leaky Transfer Case

Leaky Transfer Case
Just changed the motor oil in my '04 Discovery SE(46k mi) and noticed the transfer case cover was saturated in oil. Never noticed it dripping on my driveway, a few bolts had droplets of oil on them but that's about it. I did a search and was wondering to replace the gasket or just switch to a heavier oil(140wt). Truck is in Macedonia so parts are extremely difficult to find. And the nearest Land Rover Dealer is 3hrs away.
Anyway to check the transfer case oil level? Or just go ahead and change it? Any specail tools/pumps required?

There is a 1/2 inch square drive fitting that you back out, similar to a differential plug. That is the fill hole.
The drain fitting is a more delicate plug with a magnetic tip.
The inspection plate can be removed cleaned off, and resealed with RTV. I don't think there is a special gasket for it. Many use 85W140.

You can use a small pump made to fit in oil jugs, or buy a cheap garden pump sprayer and take off the nozzle.
BTW, go ahead and do the two differentials also. 85W140 also.

Where exactly is the leak, are you referring to the inspection plate on the bottom of the t/case, if so, remove it, clean off the junk and reseal it and you will be fine.
How long has it been since your serviced, as in a Major service, that truck? If it has been awhile, then do both the diffs and t/case with an 85/150, takes 7 quarts in total.

Do you guys have a recommendation on the sealant/gasket goo used on this job? The RAVE repair manual also calls for a certain type of stuff to put on the screws, should I just use loc-tite? I have drips forming on like 5 of the bolt heads, so this will be the job for this weekend. Thanks.

Locate the T/C fill plug and get it loose BEFORE you drain the T/C!! Releasing the parking brake loosens the tension on the large brake cable that is in the way near the fill plug, so you can move it a bit to get a better angle to access the fill plug. Some people use a wobble or universal swivel socket attachment. Use the 1/2" square drive end of the ratchet with no socket as noted earlier. Depending on if it has been out before and the road conditions it may have seen in its life; it can be tough to remove.
