Default Life Expectancy of 2000 D II

Hey all,

Can't seem to find a clear answer to this -

I'm a new owner of a 2000 Discovery - 5 seater w/basic suspension...

just baselined her with all new fluids, tires, etc... all cases good - front axle good, thermostat done, head gaskets done, etc -

So -

Assuming legit maintenance and a stock 2000 Disco

My expected use for the truck is a daily driver although my commute is negligible. I'm too old to get too technical in her - but an occasional fire/loggin' road is likely. I may also user her to tow a light boat or trailer.

I know no one has a crystal ball - but as these engines and trucks seem to have a high mortality rate, I'm just wondering what the actual expected mileage may be, based on folks actual experience.

mine has about 145k on the clock right now...

I am used to keeping a car/truck for up to 250k+ but some things I've read lately about Discos have me nervous although I know the internet usually only captures the negatives. Happy folks are out driving - not underneath the the truck.

So, just trying to get a balanced perspective.

Thanks -
Stu

most Disco's die because of lack of maintenance or over heating.
Check your coolant once a week and change your oil regularly and it should last you as long as the frame does.

of course you do have a truck with 150k and there will be normal ware and tear

these things usually make it to about 146k. sometimes 147, if you are lucky.

i joke. I tend to agree with ^evoba^, on this one. salturated northern areas can speed corrosion, if you are not diligent in prevention.

Ive got one that is a strong runner @ 207k.

Maintenance, Maintenance, and more maintenance. Fix it when it breaks, and when applicable, fix it before it breaks.

V8 engines aside, these D1's and D2's can make 20+ years and 200K+ miles if looked after and well maintained unless corrosion has set in deep. There are many D1's running around 20-30 years old with 250K+ miles on the original DIESEL engines. I stress diesel as they have far better longevity than gas V8's. Obviously they get more expensive maintenance wise as they get older due to the original parts failing at 120K and above but when you consider how much you need to invest to replace them it's often a 'no brainer' and worth just keeping them rolling. Even modern German trucks cost more when they go 'bang' after the warranty has expired as many pals tell me. Depends really how much you like your particular truck.

OK - feel better - now...

Thanks to everyone

some of the horror stories and adamant conviction I've read (on Disco forums like this one) are sorta' like the facetious "146-147k if you're lucky..."

I don't mind doing the maintenance as long as it isn't a time bomb (the gasket and coolant issues aside)

I've had German and Asian and I can keep 'em rollin... well past the 250 mark
I don't buy new, and I rarely buy w/less than 100k - and I usually don't buy too often either.

I really like the truck, but no one likes a money pit...

Again, thanks for everyone's comments.

A customer of mine has 192k on his. I PDI'd the thing with 3 miles on it in 2002 and have been keeping it going ever since.

Any vehicle will last forever if you take care of it and put enough money back into it. If your D2 needs a new frame you can get one, but the cost is very high. Might be better investment to look for a better vehicle.

I just parted one last fall that drove to the shop with 280K on the odometer. Yes, it was worse for wear and came with about three inches of service receipts but it was still running till the day I pulled the battery and started parting it.
