I searched this and found a couple threads already out there but they didnt quite answer all of my questions. so, I'm thinking about lifting my 2000 disco 2 a little and maybe putting larger tires on it. the question is, what effect does changing the tire size and suspension have on the systems that sense my speed and control all the monitors? do i need to reprogram or alter the computer systems so that my speed and mileage sensors remain accurate?

sorry if this is a dumb question. i dont know much about this stuff yet. I am trying my best to learn as much as i can though.

If you put bigger tires on your speedometer will read slower than actual. If you use bigger tires and rely on the traction control off road too much you will kill your diffs.

 

This website will give you an idea of the difference in speed that is being read and what you are actually doing. It is not much it might suprise you if you are not going that big. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html.

Lipad- what is the reason for the bigger tires killing your diffs? Never heard of this but I am interested since i am wanting to build a trail rig. Is it just that it is going to need more torque to push the larger tires which will cause more strain on the gears which will eventually kill them? Thanks for the input in advance!

 

I was talking specifically if you used relied on your truck's ETC as opposed to locking the diffs. But yeah larger tires are going to stress the drive train much more.

 

Thank you! what about all the sensors (like the MAF and stuff). My father is helping me but his experiences are with old jeeps and his Bronco. We just wanted to be sure that it wasn't going to set off the check engine light.

also, any recomendations as to lift and tire size?

I do not know of any sensors that you would want to change. I have a 2" with 265/75/16's and I have no problems at all. Def do not have worry about MAFS not related to tires or lift. Depending on how big you go with the lift you could run into problems with brake lines and drive shaft but I would not recommend going that big.
