Default Limp mode problems

I have acquired a 2003 disco 2. And for most of the few months that I have owned it it has been in limp mode (3rd gear only). Was told when I purchased it that the trans had been rebuilt and the shop did a bad job and were not standing behind there work.? I have replaced the trans and it is the same. Fluid level is good. replaced the xyz switch. did a stall test and torque converter checks out ok. t case was low, topped off and it ran great for one afternoon. then back to limp. Will be changing t case fluid tomorrow. Would like to have this rover running correctly. any help?
could it possibly be the trans/t case wire harness? output speed sensor? ???
Thank you JW

I'd start with the basics... check your fuel cap. If it isn't tightened/sealed correctly, the tank won't stay pressurized and goes into limp mode.
I don't remember the fault code but I learned this the hard way on my wife's 2002 TD5 Disco.

Limp mode can be various issues, fuel tank pressurisation, low battery voltage, xyz switch in the wrong position. Run a check on DTC Codes and then clear them.

Put a new fuel cap on recently, but will check again. Battery tested good. Xyz is correct as far as I can tell.
What about crank position sensor? Or rough idle?

I had limp mode once, and it was due to alternator giving up with no warning, changed the alternator & everything went back to normal,
Check the output of alternator while engine running,
Sometimes a bad ground will also trigger limp mode,

The RAVE lists seven faults that can trigger limp home mode. Why not get the codes read and act on what the codes indicate instead of guessing?

D2 Workshop Manual from Rave does list many codes that may cause the trans to go into limp mode.

Do you have a code reader and copy of the WM? They are your friends to have when fixing D2s.

Will get code today. Battery contacts are good. Will check ground connections at frame and elsewhere.
What is RAVE?

Got the codes.
p0741 torque converter clutch solenoid circuit performance or stuck off
p0734 gear 4 incorrect ratio (had this code with original trans as well)
01482 DMTL heater power stage drive cycle a: signal out of range - below minimum
p0154 o2 circuit no activity detected (bank 2 sensor 1)
p0135 o2 heater circuit (bank 1 sensor 1)
p0155 o2 heater circuit (bank 2 sensor1)
Had the alt checked. it is good.
went through and cleaned/tightened all ground connections that I could find.
When I left the parts store after getting codes it shifted through the gears for about 100 yards then went back into limp.

#1: Safely check your battery voltage with motor off, then again with motor running.
#2: re-check your transfer case fluid level to see if you have a major leak.

#3: If the above doesn't lead to a solution, drain and refill your transmission, but this time add the Lucas tranny additive.

#4: if all of that doesn't solve your issue, clean or replace your air intake MAF (sounds weird, I know).

#5: if still no solution, pull the valve body and replace the TCC solenoid in question for p0741.

*unrelated, replace your front O2 sensors
