They also got the cool diesels we didn't get.

Since the OP is in America and we didn't get the cool diesel discos or land cruisers I figured telling him he is not likely to need to specify his disco 2 is automatic was a safe bet. The disco 1 did have a 5 speed option but even those are rare as hens teeth due to less than 18,000 being released in the USA.

We rarely get the cool crap and it's not always the fault of the EPA. Toyota didn't option the 5 speeds in the fj60 models as they figured Americans were too lazy for the extra gear. The American ORV enthusiasts really wanted that extra gear as it turns out.

For enough money you can. There are already adapters available to match your zf to the BMW 3.0 diesel (mind the years as m57 has some differences as they are not all the same) as well as the r28 Cummins that has less than favorable mixed reviews. Or import a td5/300tdi.

I'm still holding out for a VW TDI adapter to the zf as a stock cdi 2.0 TDI or BHW 2.0 TDI makes about what the td5 makes, with a tune alone it makes much more.

I have an om602 on hand but the sump to make it fit is more expensive that what it takes to make a more powerful and efficient tdi a stand alone. A low profile VW oil pan can be had less than 100 bucks. Nearly 1k for a used oil pan and oil pump for the om602

Yeah I have been reading diesel swaps etc. something I may do down the line , I don’t plan on selling this D2 ever so.

if I ever to do a engine rebuild or maybe blown head gasket… may be about time for the diesel swap.

We have now hijacked this thread, but I will point out that the early DIIs are now 25 years old, which makes them eligible to be imported.

Let the games begin!

I've found over the past two plus years of having the little lady daily drive her disco 2, the cheapest way to keep them on the road is by keeping parts rovers on hand at all times. I have a few local guys that also appreciate my parts rovers. They don't make me a ton of money but so long as they usually end up paying for themselves.

@Turbo Arbitrageur Check the air take from the airbox to throttle body. I have had the M&S when the intake hose came loose from the throttle body, bad clamp in my case. I expect major cracks or a bad seal could do the same thing
