Default linkage is broken what else?

hey everyone new member here, tried searching already did not find my answers. the story is that a guy was driving his 2001 disco 4.0 in low range on the road and then all of the sudden pulled it into high range while moving. the lever is visably loose, the guy crawled back to his house in low range, apparantly the tranny still goes through the gears he just cant get it out of low. im looking to buy this disco what repairs could i be looking at thanks. and about how much$

A pre-owned transfer case could be had for not a whole lot in some cases. Salavage yard near me gets $125, but you pull it, and have no idea of anything. There are dismantlers on this forum that will ship you one that they removed frequently from a working vehicle, may have a little warranty. At the same time you are replacing the case rebuild both drive shafts. Look under truck to be sure front shaft has not broken off and impaled the transmission.

You might also get lucky and just adjust the linkage, but probably not. You'll also be looking at water pump, oil pump (some vin numbers), head gaskets soon. If it is making a ticking sound, that could be a slipped cylinder liner, WALK AWAY. Vehicle should be able to idle for 30 minutes without overheating.

You'll find more things to look for when buying a Discovery in the technical section of our Discovery 1 area, it covers D1 and D2.

Now, don't get discouraged. Lots of guys buy the first Disco they happen upon, and sometimes that is not the best thing. The more you know, the more you can negotiate. Also, you can use a site like www.statewidelist.com to search all of craigslist for one state, for "Rover" in your price ranges, and it will list them out grouped by city. Gives you a frame of reference.

Have your idiot friend start his own post unless you are really talking about your own screw up.
Second or third hand questions are a waste of our time.
In the future, don't drive in low range on the road, much less try and shift back into high range with out first shifting the tranny back into neutral at around 5 MPH.
