Default A little 411, Please

Hello...OK, I'm a noob, both to the forum and to LR. Always like the look, etc, but just never had the opportunity for my path to cross with anything LR until....

Today - I've found a 2004 Disco 2 SE, w/46k miles. Looks like the day it left the dealer showroom new. I think the price is right (at less than $13k w/o even beginning any serious negotiations).

Now the questions come rolling out of my head.

1. Is there any one -unique to LR- item that I should consider a deal-killer if found / not found on this truck?

2. What is the real world miles per gallon average? I read on the forum here about claims of 20+ MPG, but other places on the web say 12MPG. BIG Differential in figures. Which is more accurate?

3. And is there any "tweaks" (tires, etc) which would help the Disco with the MPG if it does get closer to the 12MPG mark?

Understand I may have some sense of what these vehicles might require as far as proper maintenance practices. I drove a Peugeot 505 gas turbo sedan for 387k miles with very little unscheduled repairs ever needed. Many self-appointed "experts" will tell you Peugeot automobiles are the worst junk available, yet I found them to very, very reliable. I'd still be driving the car had not the part prices up / availablity declined after Peugeot left the US in 1993.

But then again, maybe I don't know. Tell me about what you know. I'm not wealthy, yet I'm far from broke. I appreciate value, and this Disco seems to carry an opportunity to buy a lot of truck at a less-than-market price rate. Keep in mind that I am a 50 year old, mature-driving man who will seldom (if ever) take the Disco off-road.

Any other thoughts about my considering this Disco 2? Thanks for the consideration, hope I can look forward to reading some good info.

2001 disco SE--- 13 MPG on my trip I just got back from. Then again the whole way I went 80-90 MPH, so the RPM was 3,250. So its all about how you drive it, if I kept it at 2,500 I would have got alot closer to 20 MPG. Also, there is a couple things like getting the truck serviced at the right times and some other little things that will help in out with the MGP, so it all depends on how you drive and how you take care of her.

High part prices and low MPG's is why LR's prices are good now.
Real world mileage will be intown 10 to 13 mpg hwy 14 to 18 mpg.

Anyone that gets much better is going down hill with a tail wind OR driving 55 to 60 mph. 65mph is what a Disco was setup to run at.
Sometimes you can getthat goodmileage but for the most part they are lucky.
My window sticker has 14mpg city and 16mpg hwy.

Don't expect great mileage.

What I get (4.6l engine):
Urban- 10.5-11.5 regardless of if it's grannie'd or foot into it.
Highway- 14.8 @65mph (consistent) 14.2 @85mph Cruise/traffic seems to make no difference.

1. Land Rovers are unique.
2. DI's get better MPG than DII's, I dont know why, but they do.
3. The only things that you can do to improve MPG are make sure that your airfilter is clean, tire PSI is not low, full synthetics in everything, cruise control, windows rolled up, no extra weight, no roof rack, premium gas and a light foot.
These trks are heavy, 6,000lbs, full time four wheel drive, and a small V8. They are not aerodynamic.
Real world everyday MPG you are looking at 13-15MPG.
