Lock diff in 2002 Disco II?
My buddy has a Disco II, 2002, with a persistent vibration under acceleration from 25 to 30 and 35 on up. It is bad at 75. He replaced the front Driveshaft with a reman'd one, and replaced the back one with the kind that eliminates the rotoflex in favor of a u joint. It has a 3" TF lift but is otherwise stock.
We took it out today hoping that the new rear Driveshaft fixed his vibration but it didn't. This vehicle is new to him. It had the vibration before the lift was added.
He still suspects the front Driveshaft. There is no roar or chirp from any location so I discounted bearings/joints, and everything seems tight (but I missed how loose mine was and it was in BAD shape... there is a picture somewhere here on the forum of my gleaming pin bearings open to the world). I've read that we can remove the front shaft and lock the CDL then drive with rear shaft only. A spud must be manipulated somehow? Actually I learned that when googling for my 2000. Will this also work on the 02? Our local 4x4 Driveshaft shop has no idea where is is coming from; they replaced the rear driveshaft today. It isn't a small shop and has been around a long time, but they are not super sharp on Rovers--they only work on ours if WE get the parts they need.
I am skeptical that it is the driveshaft/spline, etc. because the remanufactured one is brand new and greased up, because he has had the vibration since he bought it (pre lift and pre new driveshafts), and because I actually put his OLD driveshaft in my rover (because mine had a very bad u joint), and mine runs smooth as glass while his hasn't changed at all even with the new shafts. It seems that if he had a driveshaft problem (front), it would have translated to my vehicle when I put his old shaft in mine. I have the same setup (3" TF lift, stock everything else relevant... I do still have the stock, original rear driveshaft including rotoflex).
The vibration is all over the vehicle, but I can feel it pretty intensely in the steering wheel.
I've googled this to the nth degree and gone to a driveshaft shop; I am really looking for ideas to narrow it down. Thanks for suggestions.
Best,
Charlie V

Me being selfish for a moment: is it true that on my '00 I just have to get a new shifter and cable setup? In other words, that in an '00 the transfer case is already set up for a CDL but lacks the correct shifter/button/whatever?

If it hasn't been replaced with one without. Today, I discovered my '99 doesn't have a CDL nipple.
Your vibration could be stemming from worn bushes in the panhard rod and/or bad steering arms (the rod ends). Check all four rod ends for play and check the panhard bushes for play.
When you mentioned you felt in the steering wheel this was my initial thought.
When you mentioned you felt in the steering wheel this was my initial thought.
We will check those tomorrow and I will post our observations.
Where would the nipple be on the transfer case? I did have a warranty replacement of my transfer case but that was the same year I bought it (2000).
If your t/case failed and was replaced under warranty, it probably won't have a CDL.
