Default Locked out of Discovery 00-04

Hey everyone,

Frequent visitor to the site but first time post here, i actually made an account for after finding out a solution to my problem and figured it would be great help to others.
Long story short I locked myself out of my 2000 discovery at the hospital today. After contacting the hospital security and 3 locksmithes i ended up having to get it towed home with no success and a broken key due to a faulty drivers side lock and freezing temps.

For anyone trying to get into a locked land rover all you need is a screwdriver and a clothes hanger. Under the rear license plate holder are two little holes. You can actually thread a clothes hanger into the leftmost hole and pull down the locking mechanism on the rear cargo door handle. This took about 15 minutes of trial and error but I was able to hook the latch without much difficulty. I hope this helps others out there who get locked out and may save yourself a broken key or window.

On a separate note I only had 1 key and now that's in pieces. I'm planning on bringing the key to a locksmith to have a replacement cut but have read that it might need to be specially programmed. My previous key was basic no FOB or chip as far as I can tell. Will my plan work or am I going to end up paying for a worthless key?

Will send oics of hole under license plate tomorrow as i got it open during the night. I will add the holes were under two circular stickers.

Good luck and thanks in advance!

When I bought my Disco, I had no keys with it. It was from a tow yard, the car had been abandoned. I had a key cut using cut codes based on the VIN, only to find that it had been re-keyed at some point. Next I took the drivers door lock to the locksmith and they cut a key to fit that lock. At that point I found out that the column cylinder didn't match the doors. So I took the column cylinder apart and re-keyed it myself so the same key works for both. Plain jane metal key. I think the programming would be for a FOB that would give you remote lock/unlock. The ignition itself is not chipped to a key.

Is there a company that i can just provide my VIN and have them mail me a key and programming box or do I need someone physically present. At this point I can't get the broken portion of the key out of the handle and it's going to cost me 200$ to have someone come get the key out and cut a new one.

I
Attached an image of the hole i inserted a hanger into for whom it may help avoid the situation im in. Insert a close hanger into the slot, hook the lock linkage and pull down and it'll unlock. Save you a lot of 💰

In all of my years of owning Discos (and like ... alot of Discos) I have never heard of unlocking a Disco2 this way. So kudos for this !

I would remove the door handle from the car. It's been a minute since I had mine out, but I seem to recall that once it is out you can access the keyway from the back and should be able to just push the borked key out.

Then you can take the handle to a locksmith and avoid the mobile fee. The local shop near me charged, I think, $50 to make a key for it. It was less than $100.

Thank you!

I actually ordered a new ignition chamber and door lock that comes with an FOB key since I've never had the FOB and my driver door handle is now broken as hell. I ordered 3 replacement x239 keys to be cut with the new parts.

Only thing left now is to see if it's possible to program the new FOB to the truck. I'll be back on the road again in a week. Thanks everyone for the feedback and advice!

Classic Rides North Wales do P38 keys (I think from VIN, or maybe photos). I think they also do D2 keys.

Maybe they don’t exist anymore or changed their name. The Key Centre lesedwards.co.uk is what comes up on my search now.
