Looking at '03 D-II S -- UPDATE -- BOUGHT IT!
ORIGINAL: Shep
Update for everyone...
Inspection this morning went fine....they found a minor leak in the power steering from a bad hose...nothing else of importance! I negotiated that minor repair into the deal, so....
For $8,500 I just picked up my 2003 Discovery...looking forward to being a part of the family!

Holly geez !!! I think I'm jalous. That price is absolutely unbelievable!!! My only advice would be to buy a new oil pump and put it in. That way you won't have to worry about the famous 2003 oil pump failures. Common....after paying so little for the truck, this would be money well spent.
Welcome and I think you got a great deal and I am jealous also, I wish I could have gotten a deal like that when I bought mine. Welcome to the family, you will enjoy your new ride.
Thanks, guys...I'll definitely check more out here to see what types of preventative issues I can address. And yes, I know that with the deal I was lucky enough to get, I do have the opportunity to tackle a few of those types of things.
I truly feel like a kid on Christmas morning...a new toy for me today!

WOW! Thats a deal if everything is good on it! I bought my 2000 with 89,000 miles for $8,000. So you hooked a great deal, i hope it works out for you and the disco does great! I would still stop by an independent LR mechanic shop, if you can find one, to let them look at it and bring the service up to date (if thats not already done.). Have fun with your new disco!
By the way, the family I bought it from has another one...a '99 with 77k for around $4,500....location is St. Simons Island, GA. The is also a '02 D-II SE for sale here with about 78k, but they're asking $13,900. If anybody wants info I can certainly provide it.

Has that crossed your mind?
You bet it did...but the 02 is sitting there unsold for quite a while (and it's an SE vs. the S I bought). This is a small island and the market for used cars isn't what you get in the cities., and this 03 checked out every which way, from carfax to the 2-hour mechanical inspection. The kid had already bought his new truck and had to sell it fast....daddy bought it for him 3.5 years ago, so he's wasn't exactly trying to get every last penny out of it....he just wanted cash now.
I recently had a Land Rover enthusiast approach me in a parking lot to talk Disco stuff. He has a tired 1996 and was looking to move into a newer 4.6L truck.
After seeing how clean my truck/engine is, and learning that I had new u-joints, wires, good fluids, tires and that she gets about 16-17mpg…….. he offered me $18,000 to sell it. He was willing to drive to the bank and pay cash.
I said no.
Shep, it sounds like you picked up a 2003 at an unusually low price? Your purchase would proportionately place the value of my 03 at less than $4,300.
Hmmmmmmm?
Congratulations on your new truck. I hope you scored a good vehicle. You made a smart move inquiring to this forum. I can’t express how much the contributors have helped me to correct known problems. Most importantly I constantly learn more, how to properly maintain and prevent issues with my Disco.
