Not surprised, There are a lot of Disco's out there that weren't properly maintained.

The only thing I'd say about your situation is it is a good example of why to pay the small fee for a pre purchase inspection by an indy LR specialist.

You probably overpaid considering what was wrong but now you have 7k in a truck that cost $40k new. Still not bad.

Actually, the surprising thing was the price for service! $550 for a hose? $1,200 for a rebuilt M/C, MMs and oil flush?? Those parts are fairly cheap & labor straight forward if not easy (Dr side MM can be a PITA). Was that done at the dealer?

Just to give you some perspective

I bought my 2004 Disco II with 126K on the clock. Paid 3K for it.

I have a tick that comes and goes. Sometimes its there sometimes it's as quite.

Engine has no leaks coolant level stays the same as does the engine oil. Runs cool and no misfires.

Just got done with the major service new EVERYTHING including a oil pump assembly water pump timing chain plugs ect.

Just got a new catback exhaust put on today.

I got lucky as it seems there are no MAJOR issues as of yet. (knock on wood).

A week later they said I needed a new master brake cylinder so I got that rebuilt and also replaced broken engine mounts and got the engine oil flushed and replaced for $1200.00. One week after this...the oil pressure light wouldn't go out and it started ticking when idling in driveway so there went the oil pump. Along with a timing cover and a gasket or two for the new oil pan, I paid $1300.00 to fix 'er up. A week after that...The Three Amigos popped on while driving. It's been a week and the Three Amigos haven't shown up since then so I am assuming that's a bad ground, which isn't too bad I assume. But now it runs lovey dovey. So really, it's a $7,000.00 Disco II. I've had it a month and I still can't drive it without constantly and nervously checking the panels for warning lights. But that's just mine.

Basically what happens is when you buy these things used is you seem to pay the maintenance on them that should have been done over there lifetime, ALL AT ONCE.

If a Rover is taken care of and the maintenance routine followed then you should get lots and lots of miles out of them.

7,000 dollars isn't a lot to play over the life of the vehicle, in fact you will pay more than that over the life of a vehicle if you maintain it.

But all at once sucks.

Bladeski and any other new owners,

This is the reason you find an independent Land Rover specialty shop.

Not a foreign car shop with a guy whose worked on a rover before,

Not the dealer. NEVER EVER.

Most areas where LR's were sold new have one or many indy shops. If you have a question about locating a good shop ask on here. These guys will save you money and do you and your truck right.

Also start learning how to do some of the work yourself if you are not a walking talking stack of $100 bills.

Thats how the dealer and most "foreign car" shops see anyone who owns a Rover.

Most indy LR specific shops have realistic labor rates and in depth knowledge of most every problem that can come up on your truck.

Find one you trust and you will get years of enjoyment and service out of your truck!

I brought a LR tech with me to look at mine. No codes at all.. test drive revealed the vibration. Not a big deal he said. Of course it leaks, he said. Drove straight, nothing strange about it. If I didn't buy it he would have. So far.. all that has actually failed on it.. are the 4wd cable (front shaft must have struck it at some point) and I broke the rear wiper after the motor seized on me.

The $550 I was talking about included the new MAF along with the radiator hose so I guess that's about right. I was just thinking also that I just found out the cruise control does not work and I cannot shift the transfer case into 4WD. It's the "inner locker" that goes bad they say. Is that true? That "locker" is to keep people from slamming the shifter accidentally into 4WD. But since it hasn't been used, I can't get into 4WD at all. That will cost me about $300.00 to remove the safety locker they say. That all said...was this thing worth 4k? The PO had me SOLD on his maintenance on this one. But sure. An Indy ( previous dealer employee) is the way to go. How much to repair cruise control?

Interlock?

Are you shifting to neutral and going below 5mph before shifting into 4wd?
