Adding my 0.02 here... I have been to 2 driveshafts place in Dallas and both immediately recognized the Discovery front shaft (without me telling anything) and told me I was lucky I dropped it before it broke. SO I guess it's not a legend, they DO break more than they should.

The second place re-built it for $190 (the new u-joints have the fitting on the outside, supposedly Naepco), and they were offering a complete one (new core) for $375

I just rebuilt my 03 shaft today on the tail gate. $36 for the 3 ujoints. The centerball looked untouched. A hammer, 5/8 socket, and a pair of pliers. 1 hour. Done. Fittings on the end caps.

Not sure if you want to go this way but I bought a new custom made drive shaft from Driveshaft superstore (do a google search) in Phoenix for our Jeep Grand Cherokee a couple years ago. I've rebuilt numerous driveshafts in my day so I appreciated that it was very high quality workmanship and used all Spicer parts. Everything is greasable incl. the double cardin joint. Although my order was for a 'stock' level d/s, their 'stock' level is noticably heavier duty than the stock unit, which is instantly detectable when placed side by side. The U-joints are larger and heavier duty, the splined slip joint was larger and more robust. It was only like $160 including shipping. Reason I didn't rebuild our Jeep D/S is that the splined section was worn and really needed to be replaced. I priced out getting that done ...I could buy a used one, but for the money a brand new one seemed like it was a good way to go. It's balanced too. I am pleased with it. I'd buy from them again. Just thought I'd pass that along.

You won't get a new DII front with 1310 series u-joints for anywhere close to $160. The parts alone are more than that.

Well it was making a noise and it was loose. I finally bought to some guy and he said it was a bearing I guess somewhere from the drive shaft. The changed it and the noise was gone!

Out of sheer curiosity (as I plan to spend an hour or two rebuilding it myself) where do you have it rebuilt? You can PM if you want...

Thanks!

turns out there are not so many driveshaft places around Dallas.
I went first to driveshaft king (south dallas), the guy seems to know what he's talking about but was asking way too much.

then I went to mesquite drivetrain, it's a small shop off 635 (not for from the junction with 30, I think it's military street)
the guys were nice, good price and they did it fast.
