Hello,

Let me start by saying I know little to nothing about servicing cars. I bought a 97 Disco a couple of years ago and since there are no LR mechanics where I live (out in the jungle in Ecuador), I have been learning quickly.

My wife noticed today a tube hanging down under the car. I traced it back to the oil reservoir (crackcase?) right behind where you put in the oil. It appears to be an overflow as it's connected to the top of the case, but it's only connected at the one end. Can anyone tell me where the rest of it is supposed to go?

Is it a metal tube? It isn't the tube the dipstick goes in, is it?

 

Which side is it on?
I tend to agree with Kenk right now.
Are you loosing oil?

 

Can you take pics and post, that way we can be sure what you are looking at.

Also post pics of the jungles in Ecuador.

 

It's about an 18 inch long black rubber tube. The red arrow shows where it connects to the crank case.

I wouldnt worry about it.
Looks like someone decided to vent the crankcase to atmosphere.

 

is there not a nipple on the airbox that the tube connects to?

Hmm, my '98 does not have that tube/fitting. But mine also has the 4.0. I also notice no PCV hoses on the throttle body, so I'm betting that is just a vent tube.

 

I see it is a 3.9. I thought all the 97's were 4.0. What gives with that?

Were there other versions from the US? or does this 97 have a retrofitted 3.9? Very interesting.

 

You'll find or should find a nipple on the drivers fender side of the air filter box. Its on the top that removes when changing the filter. At least thats where my 3.9 (95 d1) connects.
