Also, go to your local parts store and get the codes read for free, then get back to us.
If you have an internal engine noise, stop driving it as of the message, otherwise you may be racking up a huge repair cost.

Default similar issue

2001 Disco2 91k miles, well maintained.

Recently I've been experiencing the same problems, however when I accelerate without the car being in motion it sounds equally as loud.... it's a blat, blat, blat exhaust noise. No noticeable relation to the sound the engine is making or it's function.

No loss in power driving the truck, when I accelerate going up a hill or to increase speed driving the noise is quite noticeable and the check engine light blinks on and off. Once I decrease accelerating or maintain engine RPM's under 3000 the check engine light remains on with no noticeable noise.

No noticeable loss in coolant or oil levels either.

Not sure if this helps, I have been told that there is blow-back at higher RPM's up to the air filter housing when the vehicle is not in motion.

As suggested I went to Autozone and had the codes read. These are the 2 codes which are thrown.

P1300
P0303

Not certain however if these codes are related to the loud noise. Uncertain if it is an exhaust problem, bad gasket on left side exhaust manifold, possible exhaust manifold crack, this is the area of the noise, or if it is an internal engine problem.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Sounds like you have an exhaust leak and you may have it somewhat narrowed down. Now its time to get a flash light, get under the truck, and start investigating. Look for white residue on the metal. That's a sure sign exhaust is seeping past the gasket. Those Y-Pipe gaskets see extreme heat conditions and are prone to failure. Not saying this is your case, just stating a fact.

I ended replacing my Y-Pipe because the flange that mated the manifold to the Y-Pipe
cracked. Actually, the factory weld cracked and started leaking. Sounded horrible.

As for your shocks, what year is the truck, how many miles on the suspension, is it original or after market, if so Who's?

I haven't been driving the Disco2 recently but did take it to a service center. It is not an exhaust issue.

I've been told it is a problem related to the number 7 & 3 cylinders.

The valves are not closing properly and the Blat, Blat, Blat noise is blowback back up through the intake. This is possibly related to a Cam which is worn or damaged.

Not sure where this leaves me now. A probable engine tear-down and re-build.

Not happy about what this may end up costing. Suggestions would be helpful.

Skydiver, I had the exact same symptoms as you and did indeed have a worn camshaft, with only 48k on the engine.

Initially I doubted that the camshaft could be worn, but sure enough it was.

I ended up needing a new shaft. As long as it was apart I also got new timing chain, oil pump rings, lifters, front cover, etc.

Cost about 2k for the whole lot at my friendly indy shop, most of which was labor.

Put another 40k on since with no issues.

Not sure why the brand new cam in that engine failed so quickly, but i suspect the dealer who replaced the engine under warantee contributed by breaking in the engine with 5w30 synthetic.

What oil have you been using? any oil pressure issues?
