Loud screeching noise from DII drivetrain (video included)
Hello, long time Disco owner (bought new in 04) and looking for some guidance in trying to solve my 1st drivetrain issue with this vehicle.
I’m experiencing a loud screeching noise which appears to be coming from the transfer case or transmission. 2004 d2, 98k Miles, I just replaced the front driveshaft with a new unit and no change to noise. I’m pretty sure the noise is not coming from the wheel bearings or joints. Sounds like it’s from transfer case (which I verified is full of oil).
Any ideas? Noise is intermittent- some days nothing, other times it’s always making the sound, usually starts above 15mph. Note that it is definitely not coming from the engine, as it does not make any noise when revving engine in park. Noise only happens when in motion, regardless of drive, gear or in neutral. Also no change in sound if in low gear or locked diff.
No driving issues with the car (no vibrations, etc).
Video with sound:
. Note that truck is raised on 4 jack stands so that I could safely capture sound/video.
Thanks for any ideas. I’m hoping that my t-case isn’t shot.

Transmission filter would be my first guess from the video. When was the last time you serviced the t-case and tranny?
Interesting, I didn’t know there was a transmission filter. I’m going to research that now.
i have changed the t-case and diff fluids at 80k. Transmission fluid was changed only once by dealer at 30k.

Is the noise louder near the rear output of the transfer case, or the front?
Does the noise change pitch or loudness with RPM/speed increase? What's it like under load vs coast? Sounds like an output bearing, sometimes the sound will lessen under load depending on how bad the damage is. Check the trans for fluid level, check for leaks under. Note the trans output shaft seal will be hard to see if it's leaking sometimes

Or if he keeps running this rig like this his nose will point right to the problem real quick.
You can almost smell that burning heat stink from the video.

In the video, the shifter is in neutral. We're the wheels moving as the sound was being made? ...and stop when the wheels stopped moving. Or was there that noise without the wheels moving? You mentioned the noise starts at 15mph, just trying to clarify.
