Loud Ticking and Oil Light on
I searched through some of the threads and couldn't find this but sorry if its a topic thats already been covered.
Idid a routine oil and filter change (myself) on my '03 Discovery II daily driver with about 57k miles. I used Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-40 and the filter purchased at the dealership. A week later a faint ticking sound starts up and two days later my check engine light and check oil lamp come on and my speed drops and the ticking sound is twice as loud and the engine sounds way stressed. Shut the engine off and had it towed to the dealer this morning. Haven't heard from them yet but anyone have anyideas so I know what to expect/be able to tell if they are fleecing me for something I don't need. I'm on an extended warranty purchased at the dealership, so to what extent you guys' ideas would relate to the warranty would be great also.I must say the forum is a lifesaver,I've learned a lot about my truck reading and saved some cash as well. Thanks again.

Agree w/ oil pump, likely the issue. However, you didn't say that you checked the oil and that it's full...did you? Hope you tightened the filter and drain plug properly when you did your oil change.
Your oil pump has failed. There is a TSB on '03 DII's with bad oil pumps. There was a manufacturing defect that was not cought for about 6 months, these trks are delf destructing between 50-60 thousand miles. The only fix is a new engine.
You need a new engine, sorry. Hopefully your warrenty will cover most of it.
Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. In answer to the posted questions, I did check the oil after the incident and the level was perfectly normal. The filter and drain plug were secure and no leaks.
But the dealer called and informed me there was low oil pressure due to the failure of the timing cover or the gear underneath (thats how he explained it at least). Said this is common with the disco at this mileage. Also said they need to remove the cover to see if anything has damaged the engine. What do you guys think?
Also I found the thread re: the TSB for the 2003 oil pump failure. Thanks again LR forums, hopefully it will give me some leverage with the extended warranty people.
Some responses were that my engine was toast. How does the failed oil pump cause the engine to go completely? Thanks again for your input guys.

I also have an 03 Disco and went on Vacation and when I came back I had the same issue. It turned out my vin was part of the Oil Pump recall. I ended up getting a brand new engine, which was covered under warranty. The funny thing about it was that they told me they thought they saw the last 03 with that problem about a year ago...they were amazed that mine lasted that long.
To make a long story short, i am sure the guys are aware of the recall, but if they never mention it, you may want to tell them about it. Let us know what the outcome is.
