Wow - you just solved a problem for me - I was going to take the thing apart thinking I had all kinds of motor bearing problems on my DII 2000 136K, but the symptoms sure sound like pieces of filter material getting occasionally sucked into the impeller. Comes and goes. Thanks! I am also replacing the right side Air Control Valve, which threw a code per my mechanic. It looks simple -just a bolt on with a gasket and a couple of hoses over nipples, then the electrical. Anyone with experience on this?

Sounds like your EGR system. There's is a small pump that whirs at an insanely high RPM on start up to bring your truck up to temp. It's the cause of my start-up hum. It's on the passenger side fire wall near the inner fender.

There is NO EGR on a Land Rover V8, that is one of the many reasons that you MUST use premium gas.

Go to any hardware store and buy a window a/c foam air filter, it will set you back about $3 and last you the life of the truck even if you change it every 6 months.
Seriously, use on of those filters, cut it to size, wash it with plain water twice a year and replace it when needed.
