Wow, I love this forum the Discovery is running great no worries.
Mike... I run a Wix filter from Napa when I bought the truck it had a silver Napa filter I just changed oil after a flush and used a Gold (Wix) Napa filter.
I used Royal Purple 10-40 oil for the first time ever guess I was feeling rich after buying this truck. The diagnostic lights always turn off when the engine starts. I am going to change my sai pump filter once we all agree on what one is the best fit and function. One of my first thread's got 4 pages of replies wow. Love this forum.

Black 2003 Discovery 60,000 miles with loud secondary air pump.

 

Since the filter replacement, the SAI pump is still somewhat louder than normal but NOT as loud as the 1st time i heard it. It seems to be working normal as it cuts off about a minute after start-up which it is supposed to do.


Per RAVE:
The engine control module (ECM) checks the engine coolant temperature when the engine is started, and if it is below
60º C (131F), the SAI pump is started. Secondary air injection will remain operational for a period controlled by the
ECM (76 seconds for NAS vehicles, 64 seconds for EU-3 vehicles). The SAI pump operation can be cut short due to
excessive engine speed or load.

I guess that as long as it comes on and cut off when it is supposed to then I will be fine.

 

Does this mean it is possible to change the filter without removing the assembly? Perhaps if we had an OEM-ish filter we could just pop the cover and replace?

 

Yeah. As long as you can remove the filter cover with out breaking it. And you will need to remove the air filter canister for the evap leak detection system to the left of the SAI pump. just make sure you get a chance to blow air through the pump to remove any crap.

 

I didnt read all of this post but my 00 does the same thing it is a fan that blows hot air from the moter to the cats!

So I opened up the SAI pump today.

Here are the pictures.

As you can see, the filter is quite new, it holds up well and is not deteriorated. Its still very firm. I did not changed it out.

Does anyone know why then the truck is still very loud when warming up?
Could it be something else besides the filter?

are you sure it's abnormal?

sounds like all Discos are loud on startup....is it like crazy loud?

 

Yeah, sounds like a jet engine starting, then it returns to normal idle. I have a video clip somewhere in this thread.
