Default Low coolant warning?

Wondering why someone hasn't come out with an upgraded expansion tank.... one that would have a sensor on it to alert you when the expansion tank is low. My Saab has it and glad it does. I was driving it when the "low coolant" showed up on the info display. I pulled over and found the lower radiator hose was leaking. Good thing or else I would have cooked the engine. Even my Buick has it. With all the issues of sudden coolant loss, it would be nice if the Disco had that feature.

A ridiculous omission.

Weird -- I have been thinking about the same thing for awhile. Is there such a thing as an aftermarket sensor that could be installed?

Great idea for a thread!

How would Land Rover survive as a company without all the replacement engine sales? Come on guys!!! They've got to sustain themselves somehow. hahaha

I looked at replacement coolant reservoirs from roverland parts -- they run about $100. My plan is to modify one and keep my original as a back up.

As far as I can tell, you would only have to drill and tap the reservoir and install the aftermarket coolant level sensor of your choice. I searched on google and found a few threaded options for less than $30. Add some simple wiring and an indicator LED... Problem solved.

This would make an interesting project -- but I need to find a backup reservoir to try it on. Any parted out Discos out there?

if you are losing coolant there is a problem, why not hunt down the problem and solve it rather than feed the problem more coolant?

I think what they're getting at is, it would be nice to have an alert for the problem before you lose all the coolant and then you have a MAJOR problem. They should have put in a low coolant warning light in these trucks especially considering the amount of problems they seem to have keeping it in the system. Also, some problems seem to cause an almost instant loss of coolant, if you had the warning you could pull over and check it out before deciding wether or not to continue or call a tow truck.

any regular maitenance and you would see most problem before they occur. if you don't let your hoses go to dust and you replaced all your clamps and you flush your coolant regularly i don't see what the problem is. i guess my point is i rather put that money ($30 or whatever) elsewhere.

Hilltopper,

I have just replaced the head gaskets and hoses. I am not loosing coolant -- but based off the rapid loss of coolant I experienced, anything I can do to provide a warning before the temp goes up is welcomed.

Also, if it is going to be as simple of an upgrade as I think it will be it is well worth it.

If I were that lazy, I would also request a low oil level light. (why not, my Buick has it)
Anything can happen going down the road... a rock kicks up and knocks a hole in the radiator, throttle body heater plate starts leaking, headgaskets begin to fail, etc. I'm not too worried because I replaced just about everything under the hood except for the block. However, if this option were available, I would buy it. Just like I'm thinking about getting a digital temp gauge because the factory one is a joke and I don't always drive around with my scangauge attached to the dash.
