I am trying to educate myself on the LT230, particularly with the intermediate shaft wearing out the bore in the casing over time.... thus causing leaks... and whine.
Ashcroft recently offered NEW units (all new case and internals). However, it does not come with a steel sleeve. I was advised by Ashcroft "there is not an option to sleeve them as they do not need it". I am trying to get more clarification from them: https://ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/product/lt230-new/
I am looking to order a replacement from Ashcroft. But now wondering if I should go with:
1) a rebuilt with steel sleeve.... the downside is no new internals if Ashcroft determines they are not needed.
2) Or a new unit.... new internals.... but no steel sleeve.
I use my Disco for quite a bit of off-roading. How important is the steel sleeve from your experience? Thanks in advance.
In my opinion the steel option is overkill. I have found that using high torque permatex sealant to coat the shaft head insulates and isolates the head from the aluminum and not only seals the shaft to the case but also insulates it from further wear on the case. A steel shaft in a steel case is still going to wear, just slower. They should have just bushed the case with a dis-similar metal with a replaceable bushing.
Mods, one of the four members pointed out that my title does not have transfer case in it and probably should to make it easy for four members to find it when searching. Can you please add transfer case behind the lt230?
