Default Lug Nuts Stripped

Hi,

I just purchased a 97 Discovery and all 10 of the front lug nuts are stripped! It looks like someone ran them really hard with a pneumatic torque wrench and basically just rounded them off. The aluminum caps are still there but when I put a socket on them they just spin. Any ideas or experiences on how to get those suckers off? I'm going to buy 10 new ones but the issue now is getting these old ones off.

Thanks in advance,

Erick

Basicily you are going to have to jam a slight;y larger socket onto the lug nuts and power them off, one at a time.
Make sure you buy yourself the correct 6 point socket and keep it in the truck for later wheel removals.
I had a tire store mess mine up and they replacved all 24.

I wonder if something like this would work...

Looks like you reverse thread it onto the stripped lug nut and drive them off. Two issues I can see... #1. I can only find these up to one inch (I think the Discovery has inch and 1/16 (27mm) lug nuts doesn't it? #2. I think the aluminum caps would just spin. Does anyone know how to remove the aluminum caps from the lugnuts?

Saty with a really snug socked, drive it on with a big beater and off with a 1/2" socket wrench/

OK, I got the lug nuts off but driving the smaller socket on did not work. Basically I had to PEEL the stainless steel covers off them and use a 1" socket. It fits pretty snug but at least it doesn't have to be pounded on. If anyone has this same issue it's fairly easy to get the stainless steel covers off...

Tools required... Hammer, Pointed Chizel, Small Flat Chizel or Common Screwdriver... (but plan on messing it up)

Punch a hole in the flat top part of the lug nut cover with the pointed chizel (basically once you get the cover off you will be able to look throuth the thread and out the head of the lug nut... they are hollow in the middle). Once you have a hole in the cover you can start chizelling away around the top of the cover and up the side towards the wheel. You will want to use a common screwdriver or chizel about 1/4" wide. Go all the way till the stainless steel cap breaks (all the way to the wheel). Then you can easilly take it off and use a 1" socket to get them off.

Final step... buy new lug nuts for $20.00 each from the dealer and you're done!

OK, OK, you got me... buy used lug nuts on eBay for $3.00 each and you're done!

I bought mine used a few months ago and the right rear wheel lugs were all stripped... I have a set of stepped sockets with reverse grooves on the interior side, you smack them on with a 5 pound hammer and they bit down and back the lug out and you start cranking on them.

I had to do a little work on my lug nuts with the help from a hammer. The steel jacket on these things is a bad idea. They look nice, but they are tough to get off. Any one know of a better replacement (one with out a jacket)?

You can also buy them in sets of 20. Get ready for some rust though, I imagine that would be an issue.
