Yeah, no need to remove the fan...or for a special tool if you do. An adjustable wrench and a smack from a dead blow hammer and it's loose.

If you are gonna pull the fan, might as well take off the rear lisence plate as well. Never go full retard.

On the other hand a fan wrench isn't expensive either. And you will need it when doing the other things to come.
