Default Question regarding trans service

I am looking for a used Discovery and read your major service list. At what mileage on a vehicle where the maintenance history is not known, would you NOT do a transmission fluid change? I have had other vehicles where a fluid change at over 100k miles has quickly precipitated the transmission failing.

I'd do it at any higher mileage...only reason a tranny would fail due to an oil change is using the improper fluid, not enough, not doing the job right...etc.

there's a difference between oil change and oil flush.

There is, in fact, one detail you didn't list, Mike, which was the type of ATF.

I'm buying all the parts for my major service, and ... jeezus, Red Line stuff is expensive.

3 gal of ATF at $40 a gal, and 2 gal of gear lube at $52 a gal.

Those two fluids are going to be more than half the cost of materials.

Anyone got any suggestions for a pump for moving those two around? Harbor Freight, maybe? Grainger?

Check your manual, but I am pretty sure it is the same as a D1. Dexron III

I'm sure too; I was just noting that he'd missed it. He *did* ask. :-)

why does this thread require 12 quarts of ATF?

a drain and fill only uses 6 quarts.

My RAVE says 9.7 lt which is 10.2 qt, or slightly over 2.5 gal. Hence 3 gallon bottles.

I like to use Justice Brothers (JB) as additives to lubrication and fuel. Really liked the induction cleaning method. Made a big difference in performance.
