Default Massive Coolant Leak at Water Pump

My wife informed me the other day that the expansion tank on my ‘04 Disco II had drained almost completely overnight, and when she started it after refilling, the red overtemp light came on immediately. I noticed a crack in the short hose from the thermostat to water pump & replaced it (second picture), but when I refilled the coolant, there was a constant leak from the weep hold on the passenger side of the water pump (first picture). Removed water pump & inspected, no apparent damage. I’m not sure if there is supposed to be coolant visible inside the front cover on the passenger side (second picture next to idler pulley), or if this may be an indication of a more serious internal problem. My concern is that she overheated it the day before & cracked the block, but I don’t know how to confirm/deny this from this point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Water pump seal is shot, that is why you get water from the weep hole. Andy yes there is coolant in that passage,if there is not then you have a big problem. Put a new water pump on and check all your hoses and coolant tank for damage. A few seconds or even a minute or or two on the overheat light is not the end of the world.

Great opportunity to install a Flowkooler pump.

This is the first I’ve heard of the Flowkooler pumps. Higher flow & better exchange sound good, but does anyone know/heard of it causing any upstream problems in heater lines or anything? Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the quick replies; you’ve all brought my stress level down significantly. I’ve just ordered a Flowkooler, and I’ll post results once she’s reassembled.

Last question: I don’t have a service manual; does anyone happen to have the torque specs for the water pump bolts? I imagine there are 2 different specs for the 10mm & 3 longer 11mm bolts, but can’t seem to find them. Thanks again!

Never had any issues. I have been running one for several years. Very happy with the quality of the pump. Brought temps down a little as well.
