Default Maximum Towing Weight For Discovery 2 4.0

The travel trailer I want to buy weighs 5000 lbs.I'm seeing THIS as the weight limit for our 4.0 Discoverys

EDMUNDS

MAXIMUM TOWING CAPACITY 1650 LBS.

Someone here please tell me this is a joke. 1650 lbs is very weak for a off road truck. This means I cannot tow the Trailer I want to buy because it's 4000 lbs reight ?

If this is true I think it's time to sell the Rover. This thing is holding me back. It's been weeks and I can't find anyone to work on it.

Hi I’m new as well, but had some experience with towbars , the figure you quote could be unbraked, mines rated for 3.5 tons braked but that I think is metric tons.

Short answer, no, you will not enjoy pulling 5k lbs with 180hp short wheelbase anything.
My 4.6 was strong, has 40ish more hp and torque than the 4.0, and I towed a mower and trailer weighing over 1k lbs.
It didn't struggle, and didn't ride bad...but 5 times the weight, and with less power, lol, No.
Can it pull it? Yes
Will you enjoy your travels? No.
Also, add 2 1/2 tons to an old LR engine, and see if the typical problems don't happen much quicker, especially overheating from hills and/or warm weather.

The manual states that the maximum load with an un-braked trailer is 1653 lbs, if you have a trailer with brakes (and the associated wiring on the vehicle) the limit is 7716 lbs (no, not a typo!) so the limiting factor is braking, not necessarily engine power. In both cases maximum hitch load is 551 lbs. However, as others have said 5000 lbs with an (old) short wheelbase vehicle isn't super advisable. Just for giggles the manual also states: "A smooth start will be achieved with trailers over 4400 lbs my moving off in low range then changing to high range while on the move." I really think that Land Rover had low speed farm trailer hauling in mind when they state a maximum load of 7716 lbs.

Yeah, I recall the manual saying the 7716 lb rating actually specifies low range.

I have pulled multiple Discos home with my Discos, once over a steep mountain pass (that one required stopping to let the engine cool). You definitely want a braked trailer at that weight, but most trailers rated for that weight will be braked. I pulled my 3600 lb boat frequently. All of them get a little squirrely over 65mph, I recommend that as max speed. Trailer pulling is definitely the situation where you would be better off with a rear air setup, but few of them still have that. Make no mistake, does not pull like my Duramax or another full size long bed V8 truck, but they are ready to go for frequent towing.

Or Maybe the engine will just putter out on a big bridge or steep hill like it does off roading now.

Yes but is the 7716 limit for towing or total weight for both? Can I buy a bigger trailer up to 7716 lbs ?

Does anyone know if there is a car towing trailer you can connect to the trailer ... and connect the trailer to a new truck? Maybe instead of selling the Rover I can buy a Cummings Turbo Diesal and tow the trailer AND the Rover. Those trucks are towing 31,000 us lbs. Very strong. https://www.cummins.com/engines/pick...-2500-and-3500
