May possiably buy this 2000 LR DISCO II. Need Feedback
I was just searching for a car and found someone selling a 2000 landrover discovery that is way out from where i live. The price of the vehicle is 3700 with 125,000 miles its a discovery 2, No rust, the driver side leather seat has a crack in the seem but other seats are fine and i took it for a test and it shifts and ride fine.
The only things in questioning which i will look more into is:
The service engine soon light is on and there is this thick layer of oil that looks like a light texture of tar on the front axle. I asked him what the oil was about and if there was a leak and he said that they do that to prevent rust. Hmmm?! Never heard of that, but ok.
Im new to land rover and like the style. Always wanted one.
I guess im asking you guys if this is a good deal?
I just bought a OBD scantool diagnostic reader yesterday just to go up on Saturday and hook it up. Any suggestions?
Attached are pics of the car
This is what he said in his ad:
"here a chance to own a high dollar suv.runs excellent.body excellent interior leather like new.has many options need to read the owners manuel to know what each button controls fully loaded .mileage is 125.000 or just broked in.selling at this price only for the month of july" He bought the car at an auction.

The truck is an SD which is the lower end model. It doesn't have leather, wood trim, fog lights, front color coordinated bumper and other items. It might not have the sunroofs and heated seats either. The rims are also cheaper.
Also what about this one1999 Landrover Discovery
I called the guy who owns the auto shop and he said its a Land rover discovery V8I with the 3rd row seats. Has 190,000 miles. He claims it runs great. What do you guys think?

SD is the base model and SE is the top model. LE is the mid model but is rather rare and seldom seen. It does not have leather seats they are vinyl and it has the sunroof and heated seats because they are an option. On the SE the sunroofs are standard and maybe also the heated seats. It says Disco II to differentiate it from the older model the Disco I which was made from 1994-1999. The Disco II was made from 1999-2004.

Thank you so much for the quick response. I guest I got vinyl and leather mixed up as if i thought was the same texture but clearly its not.. I will be using this forum often. No one didn't give me there opinion on the 125k one with the service soon light on. Any advice on when i go see the car and how much i can knock down for that. And also about the layer of oil on the front axle as if it was intentionally put there. The guy said they do that to prevent rust. Is this true?
My advice would be to get a scanner and read the codes, it will tell you if there are any problems with the truck. Autozone usually has them available to loan. I would allocate $1,000 for maintenance and repairs. You are going to have to get the 60k mile service done and probably rebuilt the drive shaft at a minimum. That is counting that the tires, brakes, head gaskets, and other major components are OK. These truck are good but you have to be on top of maintenance and be willing to deal with repairs yourself. If you have to pay a mechanic for everything than honestly look elsewhere. If the guy is asking $3,700 he will definitely take $3,500 maybe even $3,000. That is not a bad deal as long as the truck doesn't have any major problems.
