Default Mechanic Trying to Rip me off ??????

disco 03 94 K.

I´ve been reading and seem to have found an answer to my question But I would still Like to Post that My Mechanic told me he heard a faint Tic Tic. when engine was cold that these guy ( mechanic ) described as rod bearings going bad. and that I would have to replace the engine in about 3 months or at Least do a major rebuild.

I found a post from Spike 555 that said :

If you were in the Amazon you could use a Pepsi can as new bearings, I have seen it done on a Buick V6.

It seems pretty Ovbious that Im being targeted for a RIP off so:

How can I make shure my Bearings are really going bad. Where should I listen to this TIC . TIC . and if I hear It should I be Looking at a second Opinion?

I did have an Oil Light at Idle that was fixed when replacing cables
( magnecore ) 1 of the was burned so it was supposed to be causing a low Idle and then an Oil light.

Today when I picked up my truck he told me That Indeed I had a low oil pressure from a blocked valve were the Oil Filter is. and that had caused some damage.

When I arrived he was fixing an air leak on a hose in the MAF and a SES light.

WHAT THE HELL RIGHT ?

Thanks.

If your rod bearings were bad you would not hear a "tick tick tick" you would hear a "thud thud thud" as the connecting rod hit the block.
Lifter noise is a light rapid "tick".
Rod knock is a deep slow "thud".
The faster the engine runs the faster the thud.

Lifter noise on a DII is VERY common.
Lifter noise can go on for hundreds of thousands of miles and do no real harm.
Rod knock will only last for a few hundred miles until the engine blows up.
If you have On Demand cable look up this last weeks episode of Top Gear, the one with the $10,000 super car challenge, Jeremy Clarkston's car develops a rod knock, you will beable to hear what rod knock actually sounds like.
I do not know if it is on the Top Gear web site or Hulu or not, I am sure that if you search hard enough you will find Top Gear episode #53.

But the only way to know for 100% if you have a rod knock or not is to remove the oil pan and take measurements of the rod bearing clearance.

Personally with as much money and trouble you have had with this truck I would just keep driving it as is.
If the engine blows up then replace it with a used one, if it keeps going then just keep changing the oil and dont worry about it.
I dont know exactly how much money you have put into your grandpa's truck but I know it has been alot, I would have set it one fire by now.

Best of luck to you and keep us posted.

before you have them do an engine rebuild DEFINITELY get a second opinion.

they may not be trying to rip you off, they may just not know any better.

Imported vehicles can be very intimidating to some mechanics,

but, Spike is right, tic tic tic sounds like a lifter to me.

that's why they're called lifter ticks and rod KNOCKS

clicky for rod knock

that one is well advanced but, you get the idea.

definitely get a second opinion, i've seen exhaust leaks diagnosed as lifters, rod bearings.

I've heard of engines being rebuilt after misdiagnosed bad alternator bearings or belt tensioners gone bad...

definitely second opinion...

did I mention to get a second or possibly a third opinion?

First, how often do you change your oil, what weight oil do you use and have you ever flushed your engine?
Do the flush, if you still have a noise and are concerned about oil pressure then go have a shop do an oil pressure test. Leave it over night so they can test it, cold at idle and at 2000 RPM's and then at operating temp at idle and at 2000 RPM's, then get back to use with those numbers.

Spyke.

I started the truck this morning and I swear I cant Hear a Thing. No Tics. Dongs, Knocks or anything. This is really confusing.

I think its just Paranoia. I´m going to try and do the:

Wait till It´s Broken ,, Then Fix It thing you ara telling Me.

But I guess A second Opinion does not Hurt a Bit does It.?

PD. I stayed Up late watching Top gear in You Tube. That jeremy Guy is just a 12 year old on a 50 Year suit right.

By the way I´m thinking os doing this with my Disco;

Make sure your exhaust downpipe to manifold bolts are tight. If those work loose (which they are quite prone to do) it sounds just like a lifter tick. This is a free and easy check and you'd be surprised how many times it gets misdiagnosed as lifter tick. Worth the 5 minutes of your time to check...
