i have a used plug and wire pigtail coming soon. but i've been wondering how i'm going to solder in new plug. there is very little extra wire and little room to work in there.
hope someone can post up some suggestions for you that i can use, as well.

I had to replace this pigtail last year. There is a trusted shop near me that I know the owner who helped out. It wasn’t easy but you need to release the plug from the metal bracket which is attached to the bell housing by a bolt. You can then fish up the harness which terminates with the main harness above the bell housing. There is just enough room in the engine bay to pull it up and make the spice.

I had this issue also.
Freeing up the wiring harness is the issue.
I had to remove the intake manifold and the left side valve cover. This was to get the the bolt that secures the wiring harness to the rear of the left side cylinder head. Once you get that bolt out and get the O2 sensor connector off it's attachment point on the bell housing and unplug the O2 sensor you can get your access to rewire a new pig tail.

i was able to get my sensor plug spliced in, insulated and wrapped up yesterday. Rover runs like it should now with no codes.
@328Driver , not sure what year Rover you have. but it's easiest to work on splicing the wires together if you take off the MAF and intake hoses and SAI valve and hoses. i was able to get both hands into the space and clip the plug, strip the wires and attach the new plug. wasn't always comfortable but it worked. took a couple of hours. but i did take breaks and online research at different times.

Fantastic! I put everything back together and the o2 sensor isn't working....let's just say I'm highly disappointed. I'm getting a no activity detected and the sensor is just flat lined at .45v. I swapped upstream sensors so I know those are good. Any chance it fried something other than the connector?

You may have a break in the wring behind where you spliced. I had to replace the drivers side when I did the HG's. Thought I got it right but I kept getting codes. I finally gave up and took it to the best LR guy in the state of CT: Holland's Garage in Guilford. After a lot of testing and searching, he found that one of the wires was broken about a foot back of the plug.
