Good morning/afternoon gents, so I'm doing a head gasket job on my Disco and as I was tearing it down I noticed these two black plastic vacuum hose looking hoses that are melted. They lead down under the firewall to the transmission and from there I didn't trace how far it goes, but I was wondering if anyone might know what these hoses are and do? I'm recollecting my memory and these were actually melted when I first bought the vehicle. I'm sorry for the poor quality or bad angle of picture shots but I hope it'll do.

 

There are three tubes but only two matter, one is just a loop back for the transmission. They are breather tubes for the transmission and transfer case. You need to get some fuel line and cut the melted part off to you don’t push oil/fluid out of your seals. I have a picture of the routing to hep visualize this that I can post later

 

Those are the vents for the transmission and transfer case. This issue is pretty common. I extended them with 1/4" fuel hose and attached the ends near the inertial switch. You can rip out the returning section (loop) of the transmission, since it is open at the other end and lays just on on the transmission.

 

Oh wow, that sounds pretty important. Oh that would be great. I'm not sure where to hook them up.

Here is a picture from a spare transmission that I have. What’s in my hand is what normally would be zip tied to the lift bracket on the rear of the passenger side head. The one with the hook goes back to the transfer case and the loop goes back to the side of the transmission. When they melt it might look like you have 3 tubes instead of two.

Yep when those puppies aren't put back into their little bracket and the D2 hits a bump afterwards = they tend to land right on the exhaust manifold and melt shut.
