Mercon V synthetic ATF?
I just noticed Mike's recommendation to someoneabout picking up Mercon 4 for a tranny fluid change.
I've alreadybought up the local Advance's stock of Mobile 1 Mercon 5 synthetic.
I'm not fully versed in the nuances of the differences between the two.
Can anyone advise if this stuff is ok to use?
Danka.

To switch to a synthetic, you must have the system flushed with a machine replacing all 12 quarts. If you have over 90,000 I wouldn't suggest you do this, it is too hard on an older tranny.
Check your owners manual, if you put the wrong fluid in you will fry the transmission.
Make sure it takes Mercon and not Dexron, my '97 takes Dexron, not so sure about your '03.

I do not know what the difference is between Dexron and Dexron "D", so you might want to make sure that you use the "D" stuff. If it didnt have the "D" then any Dexron would be fine.
50.5k, Mike.
I'veswapped out theMobileMerconfor Castrol Dexron 6 semisynthetic. The label says it meets or exceeds prior Dexron requirements, for what it's worth.
It wasthe only thing close at the parts store.

I used penzoil Multi ATF.
PENNZOIL® MULTI-VEHICLE ATF is suitable for use in applications requiring:
[ul][*]DEXRON®, DEXRON®-II, DEXRON®-III.[*]MERCON®, MERCON® V.[*]Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Plymouth (except NAG1 that requires Shell 3403 ATF).[*]Allison C-4.[*]Toyota T, T-III, T-IV.[*]Honda Premium Formula ATF, ATF-Z1 (except in CVTs).[*]Mitsubishi/Kia/Hyundai SP, SP-II, SP-III.[*]Nissan Matic -D, Nissan Matic-J.[*]BMW LA2634, LT71141. The what's weird about all the Dextron (Dexron?) trany fluids: most say compatible with Dex II DexIIE DexIII etc. I've yet to see Dex IID which the 94-96(at least) D1 manual calls for. Why list Dex II and DexIIE but not DexIID if it IS compatible? I've been using D/M fluid which is supposed to work with DexII.
