No, no no...get a drain pan like this. A open pan will not splash.

Then save your empty oil and washer solvent bottles and buy a wide mouth funnel, use that funnel for waste oil only.

Leave your oil filter upside down inside the funnel over night so that all the oil will drain out.

Then take your clean oil funnel and stick it inside a "empty" oil bottle and turn another "empty" oil bottle upside down in the funnel, let it sit over night, repeat with each empty oil bottle until all are actually empty.
Then you can use that oil for topping off or wait until you have another full quart and use it for your next oil change.

The pic came out sideways...but the funnel is "hanging" on a hook and the box holds the donor quart upright so it does not tip over.

Or, just use one of these Oil drip pan in addition to your normal drain pan. That's what I do and it works well for me. Only drawback is it takes up a lot of space on the ground under the truck.

I use those puppy pee training pads when I change the oil in the boats. Very obsorbant and cheap.

For all of those that are concerned about those drain valves I will say this. I too shared your concerned then it occurred to me that if I am hung up on a rock or something large enough to be a problem with the valve it is more than likely going to cause bigger problems. The valves I posted are spring loaded and when closed the handle rests in a detent prevent it from turning easily.

I miss being able to just slide a 5 gallon bucket under the truck to drain the oil in to like I did on my diesel.

Here's an option for those with a few bucks that want to stay off their backs! I use one of these to change the oil in my boat which is a nightmare...works on my disco too...

Those aftermarket drainplug/drain valves all have threaded shafts abouth the same lenghth as a standard Rover drain plug.

If the entire plug is not removed when draining the oil, as will bein the case of a drain valve... then whatever length of thread is sticking up into the pan will be the thickness or depth of a pool of oil and sludge that will never drain and stay inside your motor. 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch. 1inch ... so no thanks.
