Unhappy Metal melted between cylander heads

After over 10 hours taking the car apart, I got to the head, and saw this:

It looks like the metal in between the cylinders has melted (i cant find a piece that fell out) Is there anything that can be done to fix this besides getting a new block and head?

I have no idea how this would happen. The car has around 200k miles, and the coolant dial was at the maximum. It doesnt show the degrees

I'd like to think I've seen a lot. I've never seen anything close to that...

How would I install a new block. Can I even do it myself? Where would I get one?
