Pulling into work this morning, my truck abruptly shut off. As I coasted into the driveway, smoke started coming out of the engine compartment. Opened hood and saw flames on passenger side near manifold. Grabbed a fire extinguisher from the building and put it out. Looks like wiring harness made contact with exhaust manifold and burned partially through. Car will still start - may just require some minor splicing, but figure I might replace the entire harness.

Any idea how many shop hours to remove/replace?

i can’t recall how the old harness was secured - no idea what caused it to come loose or otherwise contact the manifold. Maybe check your own truck to be on the safe side.

 

If you can solder, I'de buy some wire and fix it yourself, it'll save you Alot of money vs paying a shop for that.

 

pretty sure the harness is normally anchored into those two holes that you can see on the ascending coolant pipe.

 

Correct on the anchor points. Probably 6-8 hrs to swap the harness due to a lot of it being under the intake and behind the front accessories.

 

I had a similar situation, rebuilt the burned section and moved on been good for 7 years

 

Glad it didn’t burn to the ground! I may fix this section or bite the bullet and replace the entire harness as a PM. Thanks again for input.

Anyone have a picture installed correctly? I don’t think mine were ever mounted correctly. Shame on me - been driving for 8 years on and off...

 

Wow disco 2 always finding new ways to **** you off. Unbelievable

 

To keep that exact cable/wire assembly out of the way of the exhaust manifold, I used 2 plastic wire ties to secure it to one of the two holes on the coolant pipe.

 

I hope you insulated all those wires b4 trying to start it! That's a good way to finish the job and/or cause damage to other components if not!
